Arizona governor signs bill banning ethnic studies

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has signed a bill targeting a school district's ethnic studies program, hours after a report by United Nations human rights experts condemned the measure.

State schools chief Tom Horne, who has pushed the bill for years, said he believes the Tucson school district's Mexican-American studies program teaches Latino students that they are oppressed by white people.

Public schools should not be encouraging students to resent a particular race, he said.

2. "not encourage to resent a particular race" - no, just to resent races in the plural,
meaning to resent every race that isn't white.

:eyes:

That's right! Why focus on resenting just one particular race, when there are so many to choose from. No reason you can't resent them all! Plenty of hate to go around.

Another 'become a wholesome American or leave it' taken to an extreme.

Good-luck Arizona, ever since your new gun laws (concealed loaded weapon allowed in a bar) I had extreme reservations visiting the state, now forget it!

7. Let's argue that Bible Studies is an ethnic study class.
It teaches the resentment of other religions.

9. Is there a chance she will be voted out in the next gubernatorial election?
Since she was appointed and not elected, she needs to go. She's nothing less than toxic to Arizona. I'm sure her anti-Mexican position is popular among a certain set of Arizonans but I refuse to believe that they are the majority.

13. Republicans want to teach young children the dark side of American history?
Edited on Wed May-12-10 02:26 PM by ieoeja
I am all for teaching true American history in high school and beyond. But if we want children to join the fabric of society, then teaching them the bad things too early may simply result in their adopting the belief that these things are perfectly acceptable.

Of course, many conservatives believe that anything the United States does (to others) *is* acceptable. So I guess I can see where they would want to desensitize them to anything the US does that is wrong.

Actually, by this statute I suppose American History classes are illegal altogether as American history excludes the rest of the world. So only World History can now be legally taught in Arizona classrooms. And that must teach bad things about the United States so as not to "advocate ethnic solidarity".

history of how the white dudes treated the red dudes. Lots of Indian reservations in AZ. I visited the Navajo....so damn poor. It was shameful.

ETA: I am beginning to see how this nation could be divided into various countries. Maybe I could live in a pro-choice, organic food country with no NASCAR!

The peace-loving, living-in-peaceful-coexistence, respect-our-interconnectedness, organic-food-lovin,' pro-choice, fundamental-rights-lovin' part is where I want to live, with no NASCAR (hopefully, people can drive conveniently to another state to see that).:)

21. wow, their universities are going to be shitty
at UIC, the university of Illinois at Chicago, I was able to study "normal" U.S. history, African American studies, Native American studies, and Latino American studies. What is wrong with Arizona? Isn't the new law about stopping people and asking them for proof of citizenship an example that Latinos are oppressed by whites?
