Rekers takes break from having male prostitutes lift his luggage to sue newspaper for "defamation"
Christian leader tells ‘rentboy’ not to talk to the press

By Muriel Kane
Friday, May 7th, 2010 -- 11:24 am

Revealed: Florida AG paid $60,000 for Rekers' testimony against gay adoptions

The case of a Christian leader who claims the male prostitute he hired to accompany him on a ten-day European vacation was only along to carry his luggage grew more complex on Thursday, as Family Research Council cofounder and anti-gay activist George Alan Rekers threatened to bring a lawsuit for defamation against the Miami New Times.

The New Times, which originally broke the story of Rekers' trip on Tuesday, quickly struck back by revealing that Rekers has been advising his traveling companion, "Lucien," to keep quiet about their encounter.

In addition, it was reported early on Friday that the office of Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum had paid at least $60,900 to for Rekers' "expert testimony" in a case defending that state's ban on gays adopting children. A judge later rejected Rekers' testimony, saying it was "far from neutral" because of his "strong ideological and theological convictions" and that she could "not consider his testimony to be credible nor worthy of forming the basis of public policy."

On Thursday afternoon, Washington Post blogger Dave Weigel reported that the Miami New Times was being threatened by Rekers with a lawsuit. "I have been advised to retain the services of a defamation attorney in this matter," Rekers wrote in an email to Weigel, "because the fact is that I am not gay and never have been."

8. The funny thing is that...
...these idiots see being called 'gay' as somehow insulting. I've been called 'gay' many times by people (mostly men) who wanted to insult me, but I just laughed and replied that there's nothing wrong with that. The look of confusion in their eyes was always priceless. For me it's like calling someone a 'human' with the goal of insulting that person. Come to think of it, being a homo sapien is sometimes a reason to feel ashamed.

For the record, I'm as hetero as they come.

:-)

Seriously...it's getting to the point where if you see a hard-core evangelical fundie condemning gays, they are never more than three feet away from a male prostitute.

I can't explain it...it just "is."

24. Yep, I have that book and have read it several times
Repetitive condemnation of anything is often a red flag for "something." The more someone howls about someone else's behavior, the better the chance that person is engaged in something someone else might howl about.

Rentboy.com
URL http://www.rentboy.com
Launched January 18, 1996<1>

Rentboy.com is a commercial social networking site which connects male sex workers and masseurs with potential clients. Its offices are based in Manhattan and its U.S. CEO uses the professional name Sean Van Sant.<2> As of June 2009, rentboy.com employed 10 people in three offices and hosted 40,000 escort profiles.<3>

Formerly, rentboy.com published a manifesto on their website intended for sex workers and clients. This statement promoted a philosophy of "safer sex because the vast majority of sex-workers will not engage in unsafe sex", and says, "While this job may not be for everyone, it has its rightful place among honorable careers."<4>

20. Rekers' public response to being photographed with a male escort doesn't
seem to have persuaded a whole lot of folks. Rekers claims he hired the man to carry luggage which he could not do himself owing to recent surgery, although he appeared to be pushing a luggage rack through the airport? Something like that.

For a lot less than Lucien likely charges to lift luggage, Rekers could have just purchased a cart and wheeled it all over Europe all by himself.

The suspicion lingers, long after Rekers' public assertions of his heterosexuality, that Lucien might have been hired for more than suitcase-carrying.

I like that judge, by the way. We could use more like her and soon.

A defamation case would be held in Miami? Is that right? I hope someone thinks to interview Anita Bryant on Rekers' claim that he is not in fact gay but nevertheless spent a week and a half in Europe with a male prostitute.

30. Do you think Rekers is aware of just how twisted he is?
Clearly his mental gymnastics have been Herculean. He doesn't have gay sex, he just get his jollies from vanilla activities. With young men. But he is not gay. He likes to be touched by pretty young men. That doesn't make him gay. And he really does believe there is a distinction. Twisted.

Clinton's no intercourse defense didn't play well either.
