Frito-Lay has started packaging Sunchips in compostable bags.
Noticed this at the store this morning. I wrote to them just now to give them some positive feedback on this move and asked them why they didn't expand this type of packaging to their whole line of snack foods, especially in light of the fact that we have oil-related disasters and wars for oil going on now.

Perhaps this will be sneer worthy for some on this board, but when a large company does make a step in the right direction, I think they need to get some feedback.

1. I have seen them and support this, but these bags are really loud!
Don't try to sneak some chips in the middle of the night.

14. That's funny. They printed the same complaint in a Newsweek article about compostable plastic
I thought, "Jesus, are there really that many people for whom this is a concern?"

I guess so!

FWIW, I think the move towards compostable, soy or corn-based plastic is GREAT. One suggestion the article mentioned; coloring them so municipal recycling departments, etc. can tell the difference, sounds like a good idea.

Also, from my experience, the break-down time for some of this stuff can vary greatly. Annie Chun's uses these compostable bowls which are great, but I have yet to see one break down in the compost bin, even after a year or two. I've taken to re-using them for other things; they even make it through the dishwasher on the top rack.

24. Sorry!! The Nat's went to extra innings (13) so it was a scrappy game (though they
KEPT leaving runners on bases!)

But I'm pretty sure our loud chip bag didn't throw the game 'cause we were shouting all sorts of advice from our five dollar seats they didn't listen to either!

My kids got a high five from the eagle mascot "Screech" (?) and so that made their day! The stadium had emptied out so much by that inning I think the eagle was surprised to find us still in our section...

11. They probably chose Sun Chips for the test marketing
because they are promoted as a "healthier" snack food. "Multi-grain" and all that. Also, the SunChip bags are foil-ish and not transparent plastic like the Cheetos bags are. Apparently they like to use the day-glo orange color of the Cheetos themselves as a marketing tool, and they would have to get over that before they could switch bags.

I don't see any reason why they couldn't switch Doritos immediately though.

12. Have you seen the new corn based foam packing peanuts?
Essentially, they're Cheetos without the day glo orange flavoring. Pour water on either one and it's the same reaction. A melting blob of corn starch.

and we all know what that means lately.

10. Well, actually.... this plastic is corn based, rather than oil based
So that means profits for MonSatan rather than profits for BP.

I'm no fan of MonSatan either, but I'd rather they used their mutant corn to make food packaging than the food itself.
