Do you feel somehow violated ?
By these big oil companies that drill into the bloodstream of our Mother Earth?

Their damage is immeasurable. We don't know how many fish or wildlife must die to fix their craven addiction.

Why do we feel that something very terrible has happened? Nobody knows when it will end or what destruction lies at the end of the road? We know in our hearts that we are seriously harming our Mother Earth.

The hurt is deep. We cannot measure it.

2. I can't feel possibly violated when I'm part of the problem
I drive a vehicle. Everyone that drives a car or uses plastics or any other petroleum based product is part of the problem. Until we move off of oil in general the businesses will do what businesses do, provide a product that's in demand.

So no, I don't feel "violated." Do I feel bad for what's happened? Yes, and I think there should be much more regulation to prevent such a thing from happening again.

9. The OP also blames the oil companies for their addiction
It's everyone's addiction.

11. But they are the pusher.
We buy a nickel bag just to get by. We must wean ourselves from our addiction. We are hooked on oil and it is killing us all. Someone once said that the oceans could feed the entire earth. I feel Her pain.

12. Not really buying that
Americans are still buying all sorts of SUVs, etc. Until everyone collectively says, "No Thanks," then the problem will continue. By the way, I won't even pretend that I would be willing to bike 20 miles to work. Some states just don't have effective public transit, and then even when the PT is sufficient, it's still a very uncomfortable experience.

16. Agree. Also, I and probably most of us would have accepted alternatives long ago
even if that meant some inconvenience.

So I do not feel complicit, I had no viable choices.
The choices come from leadership.

20. They didn't have to take this risk to get gas to your pump...
...they "maximized profits" by not using a half-million dollar safety measure. Profits were "only" 12 BILLION in the first quarter. This isn't your fault.

3. I drive 14,000 miles per year. It's not "their" craven addiction. It's mine.
Buck up and own this clusterfuck. If you drive or eat food that's been transported further than a mile to your table, this is your baby too.

5. Did you watch Rachel and hear what she said about the history
of off shore drilling? Basically she was calling out Sen Landreiu on her statement that we must deal with it and keep moving forward. she then did a montage of the off shore oil disasters the past 40 years and what every sitting president has said about it at the time. It's worth a watch on the repeat.

7. It's time to change people.
There are other ways besides oil. But we need to get serious about saving our Earth. We are destroying it. This oil spill is not good for anyone or any living creature in the ocean.

19. I bet you felt really good typing that...
... on a computer made from petroleum products, mined metals, mined rare earth metals, and glass... sitting in a chair either composed of dead tree bits held together with mined minerals or a metal and/or petroleum based chair, sending your complaints through a network comprised of mined metal wires and fiber lines sitting between routers with many of the same components as your computer, and powered by a combination of coal, oil, and nuclear consuming power plants.

Get real. You aren't an addict. You're a willing accomplice with a desire to point the finger at others.
