275,000 School Jobs on Chopping Block, Survey Says
from Education Week:

275,000 School Jobs on Chopping Block, Survey Says
By Alyson Klein

Cash-strapped school districts are considering deep staff reductions—an estimated 275,000 employees—in the 2010-11 school year, according to a survey scheduled to be released today by the American Association of School Administrators.

The organization, which is based in Arlington, Va., generated that estimate from a survey last month of 1,479 of its superintendents from 49 states.

More than half the respondents—53 percent—said they would freeze hiring next year. And 82 percent of the districts surveyed expect to eliminate education jobs in the next school year, just over half of them teacher jobs. The organization used the survey data from responding districts to extrapolate a national estimate of 275,000 potential job losses.

Noelle Ellerson, a policy analyst at AASA, said that the 275,000 job number is very similar to the 300,000 education jobs the Obama administration has estimated were saved by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the economic-stimulus program, which included up to $100 billion in education aid.

“All the cuts that were originally going to be made seem to be back in the queue,” she said. ..........(more)

with fewer teachers and larger classes.

It's arne's big hoax.

4. So very sad. Meanwhile, in Calfifornia, we have a rest room stop
That will cost over one million bucks to build, and it is being constructed out in a very sparsely travelled area.

Santa Rosa California is laying off teachers, and fire fighters, but spending one million bucks to build and restore a one hundred year old barn. (I guess out of work parents can take their no-longer-able-to attend-school kids over to see it once it is finished, and they can talk about how the kids that were around when that barn was a barn all got decent educations.

Lake County is gearing up to build a park on top of Mt Konocti. Most of those who planned this live way over in Lakeport and are not aware of how foggy that Mount happens to be. But politicians love those construction jobs.

And if kids don't have teachers, can't they use their Playstations or Wii's? I mean, with unemployment in the County now at 17%, why should we even bother to educate our kids? <sarcasm meant>
