What do people think of a country bad named "Lady Antebellum?"
In this day and age, I'm curious how this band name is taken. Is it over-reactive to see this name as offensive and questionable? And does the lack of comment on such a band being named this an indicator of the vapidness of America? Or is this name just a representation to polite, manner driven women of many years ago?

I know absolutely nothing of this band and had to look up the word "antebellum" and afterward was kind of surprised by this title.

6. I hate it, personally
Except for a select few songs from a small group of artists before, say, the mid 70s.

But most of it really is crap, IMO.

Manner-driven women? I think it's just a band name, and it's better than some.

5. Where.....
women appreciate all good manners in all people. Sort of like an Emily Post thing - prim, proper, Victorian. Not meant to be a feminist slam, but instead to a time where all the rules of etiquette were strongly followed. That sort of thing.

10. Feminists are ipso facto impolite?
I find that opinion highly distressting, as well as inaccurate. May I recommend the entirety of Miss Manners' (Judith Martin) corpus to you?

May I also suggest that men as well as women would do well to "appreciate all good manners in all people"?

28. For once, I'd like....
for one poster to ask a poster's intent if there is a question of what the intent was meant to be.

What I meant for the "manners" remark was if this band use this name to make a statement of being in a period of time where great manners/behavior or whatever, were like they were perceived back then.

I was not making any claim whatsoever that feminists are or were impolite.

43. Thank you for the clarification
If you don't want to slam feminism, then choosing words other than "Not meant to be a feminist slam..." would be a great start.

Have a nice day.

country has been plenty original

there is a lot of crap in the country genre, but there's a lot of crap in EVERY genre. heck, that includes classical music. except generally speaking, the crap doesn't survive over the ages and gets filtered out.

but as far as a band name goes no more offensive that the "Fuck Buttons", "Nashville Pussy", "Cannibal Corpse" or dozens of others. Some people are suppose are offended but I'll wager they are offended by pretty much everything that doesn't conform to their world view.

17. The band regrets it too
I read an interview with the three band members, and although they didn't say why they chose it to begin with, they said they regret having named themselves that and prefer to go by the name "Lady A" now. Nothing like the intense spotlight of a little fame (or, in this case, a lot) to really make you pay attention to your life choices.

Just IMO--I think their hit single is insipid and forgettable. Perhaps their time in the spotlight will be short-lived and it won't matter pretty soon anyway.

Oh wait...insipid and forgettable. That's the formula for "being in the top 40 forever"...

19. Never heard of this band. "Before the War" may signal a very by-gone
era in which slavery and owners' rights to practice it were not questioned.

If that is the intent behind the name, it feels about the same as when I drive through a rural part of a state and see high atop a flagpole near a farmhouse the Confederate Flag.

22. Good grief people
Getting offended about a goofy band name? C'mon lighten up. And when you broadbrush a whole genre of music it just shows you don't know much about it. Granted -there's not a lot of great music on the radio but it's not just country music that's thin-get XM-there's a lot of good music out there if you're open minded.

26. I like their music
And I doubt that few people outside the South really would relate to the name. Just the fact that you had to look it up means that others will, too, if they really care that much. It might get them to do a little historical research, and that's never a bad thing.

My impression of the word "antebellum" is that it is used to conjure up an image of the beauty of the old South, and not a call to return to plantations and slave quarters. I have a feeling that this band had a similar impression when it chose the name.

31. What got me thinking of this was a Eugene Robinson column...read this if you think this is a joke...
This column is what got me thinking about this band and how ignorant we are becoming when it comes to history. If you think it's a joke, then try reading this column and if it doesn't change your perspective, then I'll sit down in front of Disney with you for the day.

34. I responded in kind to your oh so clever Disney quip.
THAT was a juvenile joke, so I answered with a juvenile joke of my own.

Some of us paid attention in school and didn't have to look up "antebellum", so I think you may br right about how ignorant "we" are becoming.

And I'll let you watch Disney for an hour, but then you have to clean your room.

36. Must be wonderful to be a know it all....
your Megadeath answer was the start of the juvenile joke. So if you want to toss them, be up to catch them.

Next, the reason I brought up the looking up reference was because I wanted to be sure to get a correct context of the word before piping off. I had the idea of the time frame and such, but wanted to be sure. The surprise came through that context and the apparent lack of criticism that has not came forward.

Oh well....

Or that they prefer women of the pre-civil war mentality; barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen.

Ante-bellum means before the war.
