Every Republican in Congress must have soundbites from past years touting the need for "drill baby drill" and that includes John McCain. That will come back to bite them in November.
It is an unfortunate coincidence that President Obama just recently agreed to allow more off shore drilling in an effort to kowtow to them but then he isn't running in 2010. If I was a Democratic Congress person I'd be looking now for sound bites of their opponent touting the off shore drilling. The concern is that this spill is going to get far worse, and give the oil speculators like Goldman an excuse to run up the price of oil futures just as they did in 07 and 08, and once again the economy will be squeezed which could hurt Democratic chances. It is a double edged sword and commodity speculators must be reigned in as was done under FDR, that is until Goldman got its special secret exemption some 10 years or so ago. Commodity futures should again be restricted as FDR did to the users and sellers as hedges only and not as casino investments to be run up by hedge funds and big players.
