Hasn't there been a mysterious "Dark Area," that's in the Gulf, reported on for about 5 years now?

Not the Bermuda Triangle, or the "great garbage heap" floating in the ocean, but some sort of

dead zone in the Gulf of Texaco.

13. Dead zone is the where the mouth of the Miss. empties

out into the Gulf, so much pollutants spill out with it that nothing can breath.
And it has been growing at an enormous rate for years.
Which is desperately sad, since the estuaries are the nurseries for so many forms of new
life in the Gulf.

It's where the Mississippi (and to a lesser extent the Alabama/Tombigbee) contains a ton of fertilizers from farmland runoff (and sewage) and it causes algae to multiply so rapidly they deplete the oxygen in the water. It's been going on for a long long time, but it just recently (The last decade or so) started to get a lot worse. Warmer water contributes heavily to the algae growth too, so look for a *lot* of these things over the next few decades. (In fact, there's one that's been getting progressively worse off the coast of California, one in lake Erie, and one off the East coast.)
