SecDef Gates writes 'strongly worded' letter opposing DADT repeal this year
Edited on Fri Apr-30-10 06:36 PM by Bluebear
Wow, what a Friday evening for GLBT rights~!

=====

Just who is the Commander in Chief anyway?

Not to mention, it's nice for Gates to try to torpedo the President, who promised to repeal DADT this year, but his argument, that they need to study before the repeal, totally ignores what the legislation actually does. It doesn't repeal immediately at all. It's easy to make sure that the implementation of the repeal doesn't happen until after the DOD study is completed. But Gates never addresses that point. Then again, Barack Obama doesn't either.

1. Most of you will disagree wih e, but if the legislation doesn't take effect
until the study is conpleted, and in all likelihood would not take effect at all if the study determined it to be a bad idea, it makessense to wait for the damn study to be done. to fight that battle now would be dumb.

2. The only purpose of this damn study is to push this beyond the midterm elections. Fail.
With all due respect.

5. Gates isn't torpedoing Obama, he's covering Obama's ass for this delay.
If the fierce advocate of gay rights has any problems with Gates' letter, he has but to tell Gates to back off.

I won't hold my breath for that.

7. Gates is the first of Obama's fucked up appointments.
And we're still in Iraq and other than lip service show no signs of leaving Afghanistan. I'm sure Gates has more than a little bit to do w/ this. The fact he don't want no gays in his army ain't surprising either.

10. It doesn't matter what the troops think....they take orders.
The study was a cowardly ploy to begin with...

Now, I do want a copy of the survey they're sending out because I want to see what it says exactly.( and to give my very opinionated 2 cents worth)

11. Isn't this sort of thing very un-kosher?
He shouldn't be making political waves like this. If he has misgivings about an issue, it should be kept between himself and the President.

I felt the same way when Bush was in office, too. This isn't a matter of right or left.
