Company, lawmaker: Don't boycott New York tea ( AriZona tea)
Edited on Wed Apr-28-10 04:41 PM by cal04
http://www.businessweek.com/ap/financialnews/D9FC8V2G0.htm

A New York-based beverage company finds itself in the middle of the controversy over a new immigration law, simply because it shares its name with the state where the law was enacted.

An initiative apparently started on the Internet asks people to boycott the AriZona Beverage Co. because of claims the new immigration law in that state will unfairly target Hispanics.

But Don Vultaggio, chairman of the Woodbury-based beverage maker, says it has always been a New York company. He says it was started by "two hardworking guys from Brooklyn" in 1992.

Vultaggio says the company has been headquartered on Long Island for 16 years and he has no plans to relocate.

Opponents of immigration law call for boycott of Arizona Iced Tea - but it is brewed in New York!

4. Hey, I'm primarily protesting two illegitimate occupations where people are slaughtered.
This hardly compares.

However, if SOME HERE would show "half the anger" at the continuation of these immoral occupations, we just may have a chance in hell of bringing the troops home?

But no, you're peeing your pants over THIS.

IMO, your priorities are way messed up.

 It's a fact - people are not blind and it's human nature to stereotype.

Yes, we should guard against buying into those stereotypes, but to deny their existence is living in willful ignorance.

I'm guessing you're not Latino. I am. Maybe that's the difference.

But thank you for that wonderful justification of this shit law: "People do it all the time already! It's human nature!" I'll remember that.

:(

p.s. Stereotyping is HUMAN NATURE. Watch young children play - grouping like things is a natural way to make sense of our world.

That doesn't mean that NOTING DIFFERENCES in skin tone should make us ACT NEGATIVELY or believe less than flattering generalizations about "others."

Reality is where I reside.

Latino? I'm American with southern German Ancestry.

But first and foremost I AM AMERICAN.

And no, I don't mind showing my IDs and paperwork to prove that.

It doesn't matter what other countries do because the United States has its own laws and ideals to live up to. Other countries have no separation of church and state. I suppose the next time that gets further eroded, you'll just say "Hey, other countries do it! Why not?"

25. If you step foot overseas, better have your IDs and paperwork handy. Yes, us Americans are spoiled.
Not unlike the fact that we fail to learn at least one other language while those in Europe know at least two or three.

This has nothing to do with the teabaggers - I empathize with Arizona trying to make ends meet.

if I were to go to Europe, I would expect to have to show my papers- I am a visitor. But what if you are like my wife, a 3rd generation Mexican American? Why should she have to prove she belongs here (innocent until proven guilty- it is a real stickler). For that fact- I am lilly white- why should I have to prove I am not some illegal Dutch immigrant?

my wife is a third generation Mexican American. And yes, she definitely looks latina. She has never been hassled by the cops in her life. What happens when this bill comes to Texas? This bill, should it come here, will give cops a free license to stop her just because of the color of her skin. When she calls me, I will have to leave work (not the easiest thing to do in my situation), go home, and dig out her birth certificate. Why? Because she isn't lily white like me. Meanwhile, she will be locked up because her skin is a little bit more brown than mine. It is a bunch of xenophobic shit. Cops do this to African Americans all the time (Driving While Black)- now they can expand it to latinos (Driving While Brown). We shouldn't be expanding this bad policy, we should be working at reducing it.

13. Obviously not.
Ya see, it's only AZ that is deserving of all this hate. They have their hateful grip on AZ's neck and they don't want to let go.

In the entire history of the United States never has a state committed such an egregious offense (even tho the law hasn't taken effect yet).
AZ and its people need to be ground into a pulp, humiliated beyond belief for this.

:sarcasm: <---- 'cause some might think I'm serious

85. Anybody remember the ad for Pace salsa with the old-timey prospectors?
One guy holds up a competitor's jar and says "this one's made in NEW YORK CITY!"

The assembled group of old timey prospectors all chime in with high-pitched outrage: "NEW YORK CITY????"

11. "Don Vultaggio"
Isn't he the head of one of the NY crime family's?

The iced tea business must be part of his money laundering operation.

Pissing him off wouldn't be a good idea.

21. My gripe isn't with the word "Arizona", but rather the state itself....
If they wish to avoid obvious confusion, they may wish to take stronger steps to distance themselves, however.

48. again I call for sensibility on actions
this is exactly the kind of thing I have been trying to point out. Make sure your actions are directed at the enemy not allies. To generalize every thing with the word Arizona or everyone in Arizona or every business in Arizona is exactly doing what this hideous bill is doing. We need to target the ones who support this bill not only in Arizona, but Missouri, Ohio and Virginia who are considering bills just like the hideous law in Arizona. I know I have been accused of saying don't boycott anything, and that is totally those who aren't listening and generalizing because I live in Arizona, but truthfully I am saying what action you take make sure it directed properly at the very targets that it should be and hurt those who support such stuff. Now if that doesn't make sense I don't know what does. Reason, effective targets, support those who are trying to overturn this seems more productive than broadbrush targets.

A boycott to protest a new law that may unfairly target innocent citizens... has resulted in the targeting of an innocent beverage!!

AriZona Tea Boycott: New York-Based Beverage Company Caught Up In Backlash Over Immigration Law

An initiative apparently started on the Internet asks people to boycott the AriZona Beverage Co. because of claims the law will unfairly target Hispanics.
