"Next, women will have to name the fetus, pick out a college for it to not go to, ..before abortion"
Comment following CNN report on Oklahoma's new abortion laws:

Next, women will have to name the fetus, pick out a college for it to not go to, and decide on a colour for its room before they can abort it.

One of the laws that passed requires women to undergo an ultrasound before getting an abortion in Oklahoma.STORY HIGHLIGHTS
One law requires ultrasound, listening to description of what it shows before abortion
Center for Reproductive Rights says it had filed a lawsuit challenging the new law
Other law protects doctors who withhold data or give inaccurate information about pregnancies
Laws' critics cite privacy, negligence issues; backers say the people have spoken

(CNN) -- The Oklahoma Senate voted Tuesday to override the governor's vetoes and pass two strong anti-abortion measures.

One law requires women to undergo an ultrasound examination and listen to a description of what it shows before getting an abortion.

1. Why is it considered a murder to do something to a woman that causes the death of a fetus
Edited on Tue Apr-27-10 09:07 PM by stray cat
shouldn't it just be a "minor" assault if the woman herself isn't seriously injured? Also, why is medical help ever given to save the life of a fetus in utero - its not like its human?

2. Because . . .
Edited on Tue Apr-27-10 10:18 PM by enlightenment
the right to lifers, aided by the gigantic dust-up of the Laci Peterson murder, managed to push through legislation in 2004; prior to that more sensible laws prevailed.

The second question is ridiculous. If a woman wants a child, then she'll do what she can to carry the fetus to viability.

If she doesn't, she should have to jump through flaming hoops to abort.

edited for missing 'the'

9. You are correct
The crimes are against the woman, including denying her choice in what to with the pregnancy as well as the crimes against her person. Bad laws don't magically change a fetus/embryo/zygote into a baby; all these bad laws do is further remove the focus from where the pregnancy happens: in a woman.

3. 90% of all abortions are of zygotes or embryos, not fetuses
just noting that the terminology matters because the anti-choicers try to make it sound like a woman decides she's got nothing better to do on a saturday when she's six months pregnant so might as well abort.

90% of all abortions occur before development into a fetus.

4. The gop has legislated unnecessary medical procedures for women
Who will pay for the unnecessary tests? How much is this going to cost?

5. No kidding. If a patient isn't forced to view pictures of an appendectomy or
a facelift, then forcing a woman to undergo these steps is unethical.

10. I wouldn't name the boy fetus
David and the girl fetus Portia after the two biggest assholes I knew in high school.

I wouldn't paint the room yellow or send them to Syracuse. Nor would I make them eat olives, watch WWF wrestling or wear high heels.

Let's see how else I could be doing my fetus a favor...

13. What if you get a virus? Will you be forced to watch a video of viruses being killed by antibodies?
Yeah, I know, it's a stretch and I am in no way implying that a virus is like the beginning cells after conception. But it could get ridiculous if every procedure done on a person's body had to be prefaced with a video showing the microscopic carnage any procedure will lead to.

Side story: I drove though Oklahoma on a trip to Colorado a few years ago. While driving I like to listen to the radio to pick up the local chatter. Almost every channel I turned to have people talking about god or Jesus and how everyone would go to hell if they didn't repent. The common thread though most of the people talking was fear and threats.

And while driving I passed several 10-15 stories tall crosses on the sides of hills. Between the fanatics on the radio and the huge displays of religion I felt like I was in the middle of a huge cult. I imagined what would happen if the US became a theocracy. I thought of all the atrocities and oppressive behavior by religion dominated countries around the world, and all their laws shaped by religion.

I couldn't wait to cross the border, but Kansas wasn't much better although I didn't see any huge expensive crosses dotting the landscape in Kansas.

BTW, do Christians think that by building $250,000 crosses will convert all drivers who pass by them? What is their goal for wasting resources that could be better used helping people in need? Isn't it more 'Christian' to help someone, than to have a 'false idol' like a big cross? The cross is just a manmade structure so why do they need a visual representation to affirm their beliefs? Shouldn't they be focused on the unseen, or their faith?
