Arizona law - nobody is stating the obvious
For all of the people who are freaking out about communism and socialism - having government-issued papers and allowing the police to challenge people for their papers at any time is EXACTLY WHAT WENT ON IN THE SOVIET UNION. If that's not "socialism", I don't know what is.

16. Back during the Cold War we had to take "Americanism vs. Communism"
As part of our eighth grade Civics class. It gave us a superficial overview of the American version of democracy and the Soviet version of communism and how our system was supposed to be superior. An intensive six weeks of attempted brainwashing.

What now strikes me as the ultimate irony is that my Civics teacher emphasized that one of the wonderful things about the American system was that no one had to show ID to just walk down the street. This was in the mid-1960s when a black person was lucky if he were asked for ID before the segregationists beat the crap out of him.

And we all know how walking while black, Latino, whatever works in many neighborhoods.

...and we lost our freedoms as well. We are no different than what we hated with the USSR, and we are on par with the ruling communists of China and North Korea. Show Me Your Papers!

A long time ago. Any number of government agencies can demand any number of papers from you at will. Forget identification. How can you rationally get upset about requiring citizenship papers without getting upset about the IRS being able to demand papers regarding all of your financial transactions, where you work, who you gave money to, who you supported, what you bought, what your medical expenses were, and on and on... We already live in such a society. It's a little late to start objecting now.

Anyways "papers please" had nothing to do with identification, but about free movement - the fact that travel could not occur without prior authorization.

21. Hang on-
The IRS doesn't 'demand' any of those papers. What they demand is that you tell them how much you made, look it up on a table and find out what your share is. That's all they demand. Almost everyone can, if they so choose, file a 1040EZ electronically and be done with it. The only time any paperwork beyond where you work and how much you were paid (including interest) comes into play is if you choose to claim additional deductions, voluntarily, from that amount. Don't want the IRS asking you to document your charitable donations? Don't claim a reduction in your taxes for them. Same for medical expenses, etc. The IRS only cares if you tell them. There's no obligation to take those deductions, if you choose to, then you really should be prepared to document it, don't you think?

Personally, if I were a police officer in Arizona, I'd be stopping everyone I saw, especially those from out of state, and asking for proof of legal residency. Basically, make everyone qualify an I-9, all the time. No passport/visa/residency card/birth certificate and ID? Off to the pen until a judge can sort it out. You know how much fun the first Arizona State game will be? All those fresh faced illegal immigrant students? Like shooting fish in a barrel. Heck, I'd just be doing my job, right?

"We believe that the best of America is in these small towns that we get to visit, and in these wonderful little pockets of what I call the real America, being here with all of you hard working very patriotic, um, very, um, pro-America areas of this great nation."

29. I was wrong on two counts
1) You are correct, this is not communism, it's totalitarianism and/or fascism (there's a difference?). Either way, it's un-American.

2) Seth Meyers called it on "Weekend Update" last night.
