In the tech world, porn quietly leads the way
Edited on Fri Apr-23-10 11:40 AM by Elmore Furth
People are quick to point out how NASA has stimulated technological breakthroughs in our everyday lives -- but the porn industry as a cutting edge technology?

(CNN) --

One of the world's biggest porn companies claimed it had created a way to stream its videos onto the IPad, skipping the Apple store and its restrictions on salacious content.

The announcement illustrates a widely acknowledged but seldom-spoken truth of the technology world: Whenever there's a new content platform, the adult-entertainment industry is one of the first to adopt it -- if they didn't help create it in the first place.

On the internet, streaming video, credit-card verification sites, Web referral rings and video technology like Flash all can be traced back to innovations designed to share, and sell, adult content.

Websites that require memberships, encryption coding, speedier file-sharing technology -- all can trace their roots back to the adult industry.

1. Duh...
If you want to see where technology is going, follow the porn. They were one of the first industries to embrace the Internet, and their decision to use Blu-Ray vice HD DVD killed that particular technology.

7. All hail PORN !
An argument could be made that porn has been a main driving force for the technological advances of our species. It certainly explains the opposable thumb! Cheers!

8. Yes...and no
In my day job I call us "The Beta Testers of the Internet". We're the ones who figure out what works and what doesn't.

Then again, I can't begin to tell you how much our industry is hurting right now.

Vista and Windows 7 were supposed to have the amazing new WinFS "meta" filesystem. Porn collectors the world over were crying tears of joy.

15. I support both NASA and Porn.
I think, if we're going to send astronauts on a 3 year trip to Mars, they ought to be able to bring along some VERY good porn.
