Judge to rule in Lower Merion Web-cam case
By John P. Martin

INQURER STAFF WRITER

The federal judge hearing the dispute over Lower Merion School District's laptop tracking program could rule later today on whether a school administrator who could remotely activate the Web-cams on student computers has to surrender her personal home computer for inspection.

U.S. District Judge Jan E. DuBois is holding a teleconference this morning on the issue with attorneys in the case. DuBois denied a request by The Inquirer for access to the proceedings, but his office said he is expected to issue an order related to the discussions.

The talks follow a motion filed last week by the attorney for Blake Robbins, the Harriton High School sophomore who claims that the district violated his civil rights and used the Web-cams on school-issued computers to spy on students. He has filed a class-action lawsuit in federal court.

Robbins' motion said that the administrator in charge of the tracking program, information systems coordinator Carol Cafiero, "may be a voyeur" and may have viewed some student images on her home computer.

1. I would guess if she has wiped, or replaced her hard drive in the meantime...
that would be a very bad thing.
