Artificial flowers filled two gray urns. A pair of yews flanked the gray granite monument. A cedar swayed in the breeze. Below the bluff, the Fox River rippled.

Matz and his 28-year-old son Jesse, who works at the cemetery, stopped to view the grave. So did a reporter and photographer.

A 77-year-old, white-haired man named Bob Macke, who was at the cemetery to visit an old friend's grave, wandered over to the monument and took a picture with a disposable camera.

"People who don't know what the times were have no use for McCarthy," said Macke, who lives in Appleton. "It wasn't that cut and dried. There are revisionists of history."
