Mailman unwelcome at tea party
Source: York Daily Record

Last Saturday, Mo was making his appointed rounds, which on that day took him downtown to collect the mail from the big blue box at 21 E. Market St. When he got there, he found the first block of East Market Street was closed, so he parked on George Street and, carrying a plastic postal service bin, started to walk to the mailbox.

As he tried to get to the mailbox, people stood in his way. He told the crowd, "I've got a job to do here." People still didn't move. One woman screeched at him -- screeched was Mo's word -- "Nobody's stopping you." Mo replied, "Oh yes you are." At this point, Mo was getting kind of frustrated and asked the guy, "What is your problem?" See, all due respect, but that's the wrong question. A lot of people have been asking that question, and the answer never makes much sense. These people seem very angry about something.The guy answered, "I don't have a problem. You're the problem. The government."A group of people in the area picked up on that and, pointing at Mo, started chanting, "You're the problem. The government."

One letter blew out of the box and onto the sidewalk. When Mo went to pick it up, a man standing by the mailbox stood on the letter, ignoring Mo's request to move his foot so he could get the letter. Mo finally was able to wrench the letter away.As he started back to his truck, people in the crowd tried to get in his way.

My mom told me about this in the county I live. I wish I would have known they were going to be there I could have made up some signs and crashed their tea party.

3. Too bad they don't know USPS is not 'the government'
They sure don't want facts/understanding realities to get in the way of their mob mentality, sink-to-the-most-ignorant-moran level habits.

While it is really a hybrid, it isn't 'the government' by a long shot

http://usgovinfo.about.com/od/consumerawareness/a/uspsabout.htm

...

No, the USPS is a Business!
the Postal Service takes on some several very non-governmental attributes via the powers granted to it under Title 39, Section 401, which include:

* power to sue (and be sued) under its own name;

* power to adopt, amend and repeal its own regulations;

* power to "enter into and perform contracts, execute instruments, and determine the character of, and necessity for, its expenditures";

* power to buy, sell and lease private property; and,

* power to build, operate, lease and maintain buildings and facilities.

All of which are typical functions and powers of a private business. However, unlike other private businesses, the Postal Service is exempt from paying federal taxes. USPS can borrow money at discounted rates, and can condemn and acquire private property under governmental rights of eminent domain.

The USPS does get some taxpayer support. Around $96 million is budgeted annually by Congress for the "Postal Service Fund." These funds are used to compensate USPS for postage-free mailing for all legally blind persons and for mail-in election ballots sent from US citizens living overseas. A portion of the funds also pays USPS for providing address information to state and local child support enforcement agencies, and for keeping some rural posts offices in operation.

Under federal law, only the Postal Service can handle or charge postage for handling letters. Despite this virtual monopoly worth some $45 billion a year, the law does not require that the Postal Service make a profit -- only break even. Still, the US Postal Service has averaged a profit of over $1 billion per year in each of the last five years. Yet, Postal Service officials argue that they must continue to raise postage at regular intervals in order make up for the increased use of email.

102. Where do their profits go?
Do the profits go back to the Treasury? Seems like USPS wouldn't need the $96 million annual appropriation if it is generating $1 billion a year.

6. their SOCIALIST mail........
the postal service is yet another example (which these dimwits don't recognize) of monies spent for the common good.

While it is no longer a part of the Cabinet (wiki: Since its reorganization into an independent organization, the USPS has become self-sufficient and has not directly received taxpayer-dollars since the early 1980s. However it is currently borrowing money from the U.S. Treasury to pay its deficits.)it is still a government agency and is still receiving monies from the evil government.

4. I do believe in Texas at least
a postman can require that you show your identification if you interfere with delivery. If you fail to comply, he can place a call to 911 and charge you with all kinds of costly administrative shit.

Can you imagine what these Taliban Party (isn't that what the T stands for in T-Party?) members would be like in positions of authority?

They're not a valid movement any more than diarrhea is a valid bowel movement. Just a bunch of shit flowing at high speed, bound to get flushed sooner or later.

Apparently the tea party is funded by organizations that are funded by the Koch brothers - billionaires whose wealth can be traced back to Joe Stalin. In other words, there probably wouldn't be a tea party were it not for Joseph Stalin and the communists.

You couldn't make this shit up.

Idiocracy with Luke Wilson. It's a sickening insight to where we're headed. It is an absolute MUST WATCH for every free thinking person in the US. Stupid people, like the family with 10 home schooled kids that went to a Tea Party to protest "Socialism" while their family is on Medicaid multiply like rabbits, while smart folks don't have kids. Costco is the ONLY option and it's a shopping mecca, school, university, etc. No one drinks water as Brawndo (also used to kill crops) is the only beverage. It's corporate rule!

The movie takes place 500 years from now, but we're going to be there in 5 MAYBE~

Even in the guilded age when there was no social safety net and the government didn't get involved in the economy there was still the postal service. 22. I had a similar experience when I went to the first major tea party on tax day '09:
People like that have more in common with wounded animals than human beings. Just dumb belligerence. Anyway, like I said, I had a similar experience, below:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dan-sweeney/a-last-bit-of-tea-party-c_b_190063.html

<snip>

But thoughts of being torn limb from limb by an angry mob proved unfounded. I made my way to the front of the protest, against the barricades, and jotted down a few notes for this column. Behind me, I heard a voice: "He's probably writing down what's on the signs. Whatever. Makes him look like a dork." I turned, and there behind me stood a man in perhaps his early 50s with long, graying blond hair and a thick mustache. I finished my notes and then made to leave. But the fellow behind me, arms crossed, refused to move.

"Excuse me," I asked, "Can I get by?"

"If you can get around me," he replied, widening his stance to take up more room.

<snip>

34. "The New Dumb" -- excellent moniker.
Edited on Mon Apr-19-10 01:32 PM by quiet.american
But in terms of the last line of the piece:

We have met the enemy, and he is us. -- it seems to me that it's more a matter of:

We have met the enemy, and he wants to be us.

When The New Dumb first started meandering out onto the streets, I had the distinct feeling that after watching 'us' rail against Bush's crap for eight years (and then 95% of what we were railing about turned out to be true), they now wanted their turn at bat, even if it meant simply making something up about which to scream bloody murder.

Even after reading several accounts where there is talk of common ground between them and us, I still have to conclude these people are just nuts. Especially after OPs like this one, too.

Kudos to you for braving "teh stupid." (And I don't mean to be so dismissive of them, but the more I see and hear of these folks, the more convinced I am that they deserve precious little respect.)

45. That is the impression I've had watching them
They are doing a poor imitation of the left's protests during the Bush years, except they can't spell and don't know what they're protesting. They've even used some of the left's slogans like, "I want my country back". They are like children trying to act like the adults do, but their arguments lack substance.

53. Looking back on it now, I agree with you.
And if I had the benefit of hindsight, I'd probably have written something different. But this was a year ago, when the tea parties were in their infancy. One thing that's always struck me about the left's protests vs. those of the right is protesting what has happened vs. what will happen.

The left protested the actual Iraq War, which actually came about because of an actual pack of lies and actually killed thousands of Americans.

These tea partyers are protesting that Obama will take their guns away, will take the country into communism, will raise their taxes, etc., etc.

Rather than protesting real, actual events, they're protesting about their perception of the future. When looked at from that standpoint, the tea parties are even more bizarre than we're giving them credit for.

82. Pretty sure the Libertarians want the military privatized, too.
Blackwater, KBR, private militias, etc. Libertarian is just a modern name for anarchist. Anarchists got sort of a bad name when one of them, Leon Czolgosz, assassinated President William McKinley.

29. Down with Mailbags, Up with Teabags
Edited on Mon Apr-19-10 12:55 PM by Holy Moly
THY HOLIEST SAINT,
WHO ART IN HEAVEN,
ONCE SAID...

"Mailmen is not the solution to our problems;
Mailmen is the problem."

The nine most terrifying words in the English language are,
'I'm from the post office and I'm here to deliver your mail.'

My fellow Americans,
I am pleased to tell you
I just signed legislation
which outlaws Russia forever.
The bombing begins in five...
or ten minutes...
whichever is sooner.

42. This individual could have been arrested under intentional tort...
He was a tortfeasor, intending to commit an act, the consequences of which interference in interests of a way not permitted by law. Any intentional, unexcused act that creates in another person, a reasonable apprehension of immediate or offensive contact is an assault. The arousal of apprehension is enough to justify legal action against the tortfeasor.

Also, from the time a letter, card or package is placed in a receptacle, or the hands of a Postal employee for the delivery of such, it becomes property of the USPS until delivery is made. it is a Federal crime to interfere with any piece of mail that has been placed under the authority of the USPS, if damage was done to the article, other charges may apply.

These people are not "patriots", they are thugs, there is no difference between some of them and the Brown Shirts of the 1930's Germany...and like those Brown Shirts, the travel in packs, cull one out, and they crumble like cheap cookies.

I know that the FBI and SS are looking into a lot of these groups, and there is undercover work going on, the more they do crap like this, the more scrutiny they will come under.

Charge a few with crimes, and voila, they will disappear back under rocks and sob like babies.

44. but same mailman would do these things for them
if they lived on his route:

1. Call police when he hears their elderly mother crying inside her home for help after she has fallen and broken her hip and can't move.

2. Help their elderly relative who slipped and fell under their own car during an ice storm.

3. Tie up their dog who has broken his chain or escaped his yard fence, by getting him back in the yard, etc. (ok maybe not all the dogs, but some)

4. Notify the trash men when he is first to spot the rubbish in their truck is ON FIRE.

5. Take the newspapers lying all over the drive in with mail to the customer who was one of the last polio victims from the 50's.

6. Pick up kids who have crashed their bicylces, get them and the bicycle home.

7. Obey all hopscotch jumps/rules for the little girls who use sidewalk chalk and have made a grid on the sidewalk.

How do I know? My father did them. And, probably a lot more I never heard about. Guess what? Your mailman keeps confidential too all the lesbian bondage magazines you subscribe to as well, so Teabaggers/Republicans should be careful when messing with the USPS.

Actually anyone messing with USPS collecting mails from collection boxes should be shot, IMHO. ;-)
And I am sure a federal offense was committed by the person who would not let that do the collection unimpeded.

51. the solution is simple but the MSM will never do it
..someone in congress simply needs to propose privatizing police and fire. When you call 911, a quick computer check tells would be responders whether or not you are current on your "premiums" just like healthcare or car insurance, etc. If you're in good standing, they'll respond to your emergency. Why should your precious tax dollars pay to save someone Else's kids from a fire? They had the fire, not you! This needs to be proposed and debated so tea-baggers can see how hypocritical they are.

A small refinement to your excellent idea.
"...someone in congress simply needs to propose privatizing police and fire."

The refinement - someone needs to talk some dumbass republican into sponsoring it and then talk to a lot of democrats into not opposing it UNTIL it reaches the debate stage. By subtly opposing it until the Repubs like Boner kneejerk react to it (and Bachmann gets on TV and says what a wonderful idea it is), the Dems could score BIG TIME.

But we have to get an idiot to sponsor the damn thing first. Who's our patsy?

52. They will be happy to privatize it completely
And I have just the person to do that -- me. I can do just like Carlos Slim did privatizing the Mexican phone company, privatize the USPS and give me (oops, I mean allow me as CEO to exercise options on a 47% minority stake in the enterprise) a controlling interest. I think my first improvement will be to change postage rates on checks to be 2% of the face value of the check, collected from the addressee. I know the teabaggers will feel victorious when they negotiate it down (remember, free markets) to 1.75% for 3-day delivery and a mere 1% if they can live with 3-week delivery.

Now if I can average a 1.43% income stream off of all Social Security and other pension checks that are mailed, (:think: note to self, get MOU in place with banks to charge postage rates on bank statements as a percentage of the account balance) I figure it will take me less than a decade to become a multi-billionaire.

"Why don't you have a job?" and I think that is fair. Why aren't these people working? What do they do for money? Many of them, like me, probably work an off shift or are students. But if they are unemployed and taking unemployment compensation, or social security checks, or social security disability checks, I think the question pertains to them. Because they protest the very things that benefit them while PREVENTING someone who HAS a freakin' job and is trying to do it from doing it!

Someone needs to remind these asshats that it is a federal offense to tamper with the mail. I'm guessing that physically keeping a mailman from performing his duties, not allowing him to retrieve a letter -- those can't be legal either.

I hope someone has it on a cell phone camera and alerts the Feds. No one should have to put up with that nonsense. He must have felt threatened, I know I would have.
