Here's a few everyday restaurant menu items way worse than KFC's Double Down
Not that I'm saying the Double Down is a healthy menu choice (it isn't - not by a long shot) but I'm just trying to put things in perspective:

Carl's Jr Guacamole Bacon Six Dollar Burger
Calories: 1040
Calories from fat: 630
Fat: 70
Saturated fat: 25
Sodium: 2240

Wendy's Baconator Triple
Calories: 1350
Calories from fat: 810
Fat: 90.0
Saturated fat: 40.0
Sodium: 2780

Chilis Jalapeno Smokehouse Burger
Calories: 2130 (!!!!!!!!!! :puke: )
Fat: 139
Saturated fat: 43
Sodium: 6460

Carls Jr Big Country Breakfast Burrito
Calories: 750
Calories from fat: 410
Fat: 46
Saturated fat: 13
Sodium: 1510

I'm sure there's way more that I'm not thinking of but it's pretty disgusting. I saw a pasta dish at Claim Jumper that has 3200 calories. Wow.

Is it avocado? Avocados are on my shopping list this time of year. I really like them.
I don't ever eat fast food because of dairy issues.

82. Not really. I have a diet rich in fruit, vegetables, grains, fish, nuts and

other items. I occasionally go off my regimen, like on a holiday, but as a rule I stay away from excess and falling back into a snackish routine.

Frankly I feel much better with my habits than I did when I was a culinary omnivore.

Now I know true vegans who looked truly unhealthy. The looked like they could be knocked over by a small breeze and were thin as a rail.

I wouldn't go that far.

The ones I know don't look unhealthy at all -- in fact my dad has reversed his typical american aging crap after going vegan (no more diabetes or high blood pressure meds.) My only problem is discipline. I simply like to eat a lot of stuff that isn't on their radar, however, the stuff on this post: BLECH!!

16. We have 100,000 members here.
The population of the US is over 320,000,000. We're like 1% of 1%. We can choose not to buy this shit but that doesn't mean that the majority of the population doesn't know any better. Big fast food joints like KFC see us as nothing but walking dollar signs, they'll continue to make and market this shit as long as there's idiots willing to eat it. Of course they do customer surveys (I refuse to use the label "consumer") to prove that customers want healthy menu options - and they occassionally come through every once in a while - but time and time again they keep going back to the Baconator.

88. You could argue the same thing about Phillip Morris cancer sticks.

Many states won't let you near a bar or restaurant if you want to light up now. I know that it is a slightly different concept from killer sandwiches, but the concept of a corporation killing you with a carcinogen in the form of a tobacco product or a mega burger is basically the same.

At some point somebody has to be the nanny and control corrupt corporations. They can say "sure you don't have to eat it", but for some eating a cheap burger is their only option.

61. Umm did opur free speech rights get taken away recently?
Do we not have the right to discuss how stupid some food items are. We have the right to criticism as well. We also have the right to discuss the implications of these food choices on health care costs.

Do you feel that people at least have a legitimate basis to say "hey if bozo over there wants to shovel down 50 grams of fat burgers who is going to pay for his pacemaker?" Diabetes and heart disease (I have both due to my own stupidity) are running ramp-it in our country and standing up and pointing out what toxic piles of swill these sandwiches are, is not wrong.

Extremism in the defense of good health is no vice.

Your recipe is okay, but I really, really like the taste of ripe avocados. With garlic. The lemon juice gives it bite.

I planted a baby avo tree last fall, but it has a long way to go before fruiting.

22. Okay, I don't see the harm in eating something crazy like this once in a while
In fact yesterday I tried the double-down because I was curious about it.

It says it's 540 calories, which I ate on a day I consumed less than 2000 and I offset the salt by consuming much less salt apart from this.

Yes, it's crazy for people to eat this stuff regularly, but to have as a treat once in a while?

No big deal in that case.

Was it tasty or not?

Calories notwithstanding, what about the sodium...that's the bad thing for me. But if was tasty enough, I might eating a partial sandwich, if I ever came across one.

Was it delightful?

The chicken itself was better than adding the bacon and cheese.

On the plus side, there's almost no carbs in the thing since it has no bun.

25. Where did you get that photo of the Baconator Triple?
It's reprehensible, but it's only THREE patties, rather than six. And you missed the 3.5g trans fat, the 40g carbs, the 10g sugars, the lowly 2g fiber...about the only positive thing about this sandwich is it's got 60 percent of your RDA of iron and if you ate this thing, a Sour Cream and Chives potato and a medium Coke you'd be good to go if you fucked up and forgot to eat breakfast and lunch like I've been known to do.

33. 6460 mg of salt in the Chilis Jalapeno Smokehouse Burger
that is like 5-6 DAYS' worth of salt in a healthy diet, or even more for someone trying to lower blood pressure (a friend told me she got her salt intake down to 700-1000 mg per day for a while to lower hers). I believe 2000 is advised as max, but something more like 1200-1600 mg should be the goal. Sodium is now considered as dangerous as cigarettes for people's health.

110. I have also been watching salt just b/c it sensible to do so
I never add salt to anything anymore, and always check labels for sodium content. Amazing the number of otherwise "healthy" frozen entrees that have ca. 600 mg of salt. Tracking my intake of calories, fat, salt, sugar, fiber and so on at http://www.NutriMirror.com was quite interesting and showed me I was getting more sugar and salt than I thought I was. I didn't have the discipline to keep up the logging but used it to get a good idea of where I was at and what I should change. The idea now of eating anything laden with fat, sugar, and salt is just a turn-off to me.

On those occasions where we head over to the Five Guys by the theater, we split the regular fries two or three ways, typically with Little Burgers and fixin's.

98. The Kentucky Hot Brown.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot_Brown

Ingredients

The Hot Brown is an open-faced sandwich of turkey and bacon, covered in Mornay sauce and baked or broiled until the bread is crisp and the sauce begins to brown. Many Hot Browns also include ham with the turkey, and either pimentos or tomatoes over the sauce, and imitation Hot Browns sometimes substitute a commercial cheese sauce instead of the Mornay sauce, but fans of the dish usually decry this substitution. Some restaurants even offer a 'veggie brown' nowadays to attract vegetarians, as the recipe is easy to modify with avocado, or, less commonly, soy burger.

(the veggie hot brown using eggplant can be found at Ramsey's in Lexington Ky)

This one is from Lynn's Paradise Cafe in Louisville, Ky Highly recommended by "Road Food" and me. Lynn is an old friend.

restaurants that are equally as bad or worse.

however, they are not required to provide nutrition information

just because a dish costs $45 doesn't make it nutritious

nor should it be, necessarily

there is a time and a place for saturated fat, cholesterol, salt, etc.

Los Angeles bans fast food in poor areas to tackle obesity

How McDonald's Targets the "Urban Market"
http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/375154/how_mcdonalds_targets_the_urban_market_pg2.html?cat=35

"When I began working at McDonald's, many people asked me why they, and other fast food restaurants, tend to cater to poor minorities. The answer is simple: Educated people, of any color or nationality, know better than to consume harmful products. Educated people are willing to spend a little bit more money to eat healthier foods. But poor minorities often don't have that choice."

It is not all a lie and an illusion that the working poor have a poorer diet.
