CHAMPAIGN, Ill.

— When a man with a video camera at a tea party protest asked Champaign Mayor Jerry Schweighart what he thought of President Barack Obama, the three-term Republican didn't hesitate.

"I don't think he's American, personally," the mayor said Thursday in a video that's been posted on YouTube. "You know, if you're not willing to produce an original certificate like a birth certificate, then you've got something to hide."

The 71-year-old Schweighart told The Associated Press on Friday that he stands by the statement.

"Oh, sure," he said. "My stand, and I don't understand why everybody is so upset, is he's never shown the original birth certificate."

I have asked the same questions to the birthers I work around. I have been told Newspaper could have been grandparents phoning in the birth announcement after Stanley called from Kenya to tell grandparents of the birth. Next up COLB some state they will be happy with the long form version and question why it is not released. Next up: 1 Wacky bagger says he is going to launch a website to collect donations for the Childrens ward of Kapiolani Hospital (Obama birth hospital) to be donated in the name of Obama's Birth Doctor as recorded on his Long Version COLB. According to him he will use non-political and generic terms like in order to honor the doctor that brought Obama the first African American President and first President from hawaii into the world. Their hope is that they will solicit a million dollars and then hope that the White House will refuse to release the COLB making it a choice between donating a large sum to sick kids or Obama being selfish with his records...

they (team Obama) must have had an insider who worked @ the hospital take the call from Kenya

Isn't it possible that Obama born in Kenya on a date prior to 4 Aug 61 after his arrival as say a one or two week old lad the mom and grand parents take him down to Dept of Health and register as a newborn born at home. According to the Birthers in 1961 Hawaii you did not have to be born in a hospital there to receive a COLB however, the vital difference is the witness block on the COLB form. They say on Obama's it will be blank because no Physician witnessed his birth and will have a code for born at home which according to them will raise enough questions to why he never told people that he was not born in the hospital.

It just never stops, I told the guy that said he is develping a website to solicit donations, good luck at least the kids at Kapiolani will get something good out of your madness....

Well, Champaign county is, anyway--southern Illinois is pretty red, but the county went heavily for Obama in '08 and for Kerry in '04. (I think it went for Gore, too, but by a narrower margin.)

But of the two towns (Champaign and Urbana) that share the university campus Champaign is the more conservative ... and obviously the mayor is a nutjob.

17. It is time to take a stand and call these people out. If you are a

Mayor, I would hope you have intelliegence. Intelligence
will show that Obama was born in Hawaii.

These people are simply saying they do not believe as a STRATEGY.
The Strategy is do everything possible to marginalize our
President. The underlying strategy is to make sure Obama
is not elected for a second term. They are not stupid enough
to try to have a recall election.(This is what they would do
if they really believed Obama not to be a citizen.)
Instead let him die of a thousand cuts. Marginalize
him by making him sound unworthy. Some of these Teabaggers
did the same thing with Clinton. Spent their lives digging
up dirt to spread.

When elected officials participate in this dirt, they do not
deserve to be recognized. They are Birthers.

It is time for the Rational in the Republican Party to stop
this sick strategy. They can jump all over Obama's policies
with two feet, that is their right. This Birther stuff is
a bridge too far.

There used to be responsible Conservatives who would keep the
party at least rational. I am losing respect fast.

23. The Mayor is a retired cop, and he THINKS like a cop.

Champaign IS more conservative than Urbana, and the Mayor demonstrates it. Remember, however, that elections in Champaign are non-Parisian. What that means, in reality, is Dems run and Repubs run and everybody gets to pretend that they vote based on the person rather than the party. The Mayor before Jerry was a staunch Dem who served for at least two terms (maybe three--I can't remember for sure. I want to say Dannel was in office 1987 to 1999.) An odd tidbit of local trivia is that Dannel's mom was Vashti McCollum the lady who went to the
Supreme Court to keep religion OUT of public schools:

Schweighardt is a family name that is fairly well recognized locally, and I have little doubt that Jerry has benefited from that name recognition. There is a lady who is rumored to be planning (according to my pals in the local GOP) to run against Jerry in the next election. Jerry has not been in good health and has been making noises that he's in his last term, so maybe she is the party designated heir to that seat--I dunno.

Pray for me, DU, I have been planning to run for office in Champaign in the next round of municipal elections. I dunno if they are ready for me!
