A New Ten Commandments

1. Do no Harm.
2. Let Reason lead you always.
3. Treat others as you wish to be Treated.
4. Master your passions.
5. Do good Deeds.
6. Never cease in the quest for new Knowledge.
7. Learn to Obey before you Command.
8. Trust what you are Shown, not what you are Told.
9. Choose your Friends and Associates carefully.
10. Be aware of Consequences, all Actions have Reactions.

They'll never work.
Organized religion can't make money off kindness and common sense.

Amen.

8. I'm going to start a Church of Hypocrisy... Anyone wanna convert?
Everyone on the face of the planet would be eligible because they would all be hypocrites. Okay, I'll exclude babies under 6 months old because they probably haven't mastered the art of hypocrisy yet. I think I'll give automatic 'Cardinal' status to Palin, Fox News, all right wing radio hosts, and other top hypocrites. Then I'll give 'Bishophoods' to the next tier of hypocrites. But don't despair, you too can enter the kingdom of hypocrisy if you continually say one thing, yet do another.

Amen, and amen...

Anyone wanna join? Send your first donations to "Imabigfuckinggoddamnedhypocrite.com".

14. When I was about fifteen, my mother, appalled by
my total lack of interest in religion, asked me if there was anything at all I'd taken away from my mercifully brief Catholic school education. I said, "Sure, hypocrisy is the secret to getting along in life."

She said they taught me well.

17. My mother, the staunch Irish Catholic,
Edited on Sat Apr-17-10 02:50 PM by Warpy
was an agnostic who believed firmly in reincarnation, typically Irish. She turned down Last Rites, saying she didn't want to die that big a hypocrite.

Yes, she was cool. The world is a poorer place without her.

(it did take her a full 15 seconds to pick her lower jaw up off the floor and give that great an answer, though)

18. I've decided to make Glenn Beck a cardinal in my Hypocrisy Church...
Beck throws around 'god' and 'faith' all the time on his freak radio and television shows just to dupe the mindless religious right zombies who fall to their knees and start to chant if they hear the word "Jesus". But if his mostly illiterate and ignorant audiences actually listened to Beck they would realize he not only doesn't follow the teachings of their Jeeeesssssssuuuuss, but actually breaks the 9th Commandment every day by bearing false witness against his neighbors. Beck lies constantly about others because he is making huge amounts of money for doing so. But the religious right zombies are too stupid to realize they are being played for fools by a con man.

A month ago Glenn Beck told his audience to leave their churches if they find anything there that even hints of 'social justice'. Beck claims to be a Christian, but if he was, how did he miss even one of the 2,000 references to social justice in the Bible? Beck is a classic con man and hypocrite. But a typical conservative extremist. I'd like to see God try to cram Beck through the eye of a needle to get to heaven.

One more thing: The Bible says "Take the plank out of your own eye before trying to remove the splinter out of another's" and it also states "judge not, lest ye be judged". Right wing radio and television hosts do nothing but judge others, but their conservative extremist fans fail to see they are virtually worshipping the worst hypocrites in the country. How are they able to deceive themselves into believing Beck, Hannity, Limbaugh are 'Christians' and talking about 'God's' word? I find their delusion fascinating, but troubling...

I know everyone has been guilty of a bit of hypocrisy now and then, but right wing radio hosts make huge amounts of money off their mutant and constant hypocrisy.

4. I agree with the other guy, without constant threats, fear and violence we can't have 'peace'...
Good list though. Too bad there are so many people who seem not to know of anything on it, or know but don't practice them. And you're right, organized (man-made) religion wouldn't have a way to cash in on just doing what is right.

I am a minister in the Universal Life Church. Their motto was "whatever you know in your own heart to be true, is true". When you think about it, most of us do know what is right and true and live our lives that way. So even though the Universal Life Church a minister-creating company it still believes in doing what is right. And at least they are up front about their reason for existence. They are in it for the money. What other religion would admit that? I'll put my credentials up against the Pope's any time. I paid $3 for mine and I didn't hurt anyone, or molest any children, but the Pope can't say he wasn't a part of a molestation coverup.

13. It sounds good but what perpose does it serve?
Edited on Sat Apr-17-10 01:51 PM by zeemike
i actually know the answer....to spread good will and peace.

But that begs the question of the purpose of the original 10.
so let me suggest that thee perpose of the original 10 was to form a nation...that of Israel.
And at that time good will and peace were not the main concerns. They had to form a nation out of 12 tribes that had been living under Egyptian rule for generations.
My contention is that the Ten Commandments worked the same way our constitution worked to form a nation.

16. I like the commandment that compares my (now ex) wife to an ass...
...and the same commandment compares her to a manservant (slave), oxen and other assorted farm tools and beasts. And when you add to that the fact no women were allowed to participate in the writing of the Bible it makes 'god' seem to be a very sexist entity... And if god was male, then why? Is there a Mrs God to accompany him in all of creation? Or does he just amuse himself by tormenting people, like rats in a cage to poke at and laugh at? God seemed to really be into violence, revenge and even incest a lot in the Bible. I guess I need to find one of those people God talks to so I could ask God a few questions through an earthly medium...

19. What you are talking about is the law.
The commandment says honer your father AND mother.
I am neither defending the bible or promoting it....it says what it says and we can ether learn from it or let our own prejudices and anger obscure the conversation.

20. No, that's a different commandment. Here is the one I'm talking about
"Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbor's"

There are several interpretations of this commandment, but each one virtually equates a woman to an oxen or a possession. I get the intent of the commandment, but it seemed a bit sexist to me. BTW, depending on its source, this can be either the 8th, 9th or 10th commandment. Different religious originations have it in different places.

The commandment you are talking about is honoring your mother and father.

36. And you think that did not apply to woman?
Because everything that can be coveted was not listed?
But it reflected the times when it was men that had the power....I woman may well have coveted but did not have the power to take what was their neighbors.

32. The Eightfold Path covers it pretty well. So does the Law of Threefold Return.
They both work pretty well. One is from a religion with no god, and the other is from a religion with many gods and goddesses.

The point is (as I'm pretty sure you've figured out) that you can't just SAY that certain commandments or principles are the way you live, you actually have to SHOW it by your behavior. That's the hard part, and it's cheating to pretend otherwise. But they all work pretty well when adherents stfu and just get to work.

Hekate

"Weareth not a red shirt in a Sci Fi film."
