Liberal!
What do our opponents mean when they apply to us the label "Liberal?" If by "Liberal" they mean, as they want people to believe, someone who is soft in his policies abroad, who is against local government, and who is unconcerned with the taxpayer's dollar, then the record of this party and its members demonstrate that we are not that kind of "Liberal." But if by a "Liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people -- their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties -- someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "Liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "Liberal."

John Fitzgerald Kennedy

1. It means we want to take their money and give it to brown people.
Tell 'em that and watch 'em cook.

2. One synonym of "liberal" is "generous"
Generous Constitutional and civil rights, generous civil liberties, generous aid for people who really need it.

3. Great quote to carry in your purse or wallet - I'll often say...
"Of course I'm a liberal, on the right side of history every time!"

It's easy to remember and shuts them up fast.

4. Adlai Stevenson
I have been thinking that I would make a proposition to my Republican friends... that if they will stop telling lies about the Democrats, we will stop telling the truth about them. <1952>

5. The Founding Fathers & Jesus were LIBERAL, imo...
I love your line "Conservatives are not necessarily stupid, but most stupid people are conservatives.- John Stuart Mill"

I consider our founding fathers to be very liberal. They fought against the conservative tyranny of English domination. Can anyone see Beck, Hannity or Limbaugh picking up a musket and put their lives on the line? LOL, even that thought is laughable...

I also consider Jesus to be EXTREMELY liberal. In fact, I don't see how a conservative extremist can be a practicing Christian, because their beliefs are totally opposite. The conservative 'Christians' who I have known in my life seem to walk the farthest from Jesus' path, while all my liberal 'Christian' friends follow the teachings of Jesus in their everyday lives and their political lives.

6. George Washington
"As Mankind becomes more liberal, they will be more apt to allow that all those who conduct themselves as worthy members of the community are equally entitled to the protections of civil government. I hope ever to see America among the foremost nations of justice and liberality."

7. Well of course WE don't mind being called...................
liberal, but for a couple of decades after Reagan it became a epithet not only to conservatives, but also to the squishy middle. That's actually where and why "progressive" came into use. It was just another word for liberal without all the liberal word baggage.

The demonizing word for the last decade or so has gone from liberal to socialist. Now this I kind of like. Every Democratic presidential candidate from Clinton on has been called a "socialist". And every Dem candidate who was called a socialist has either won or won close to 50% of the vote. Guess what that means? Close to half or MORE than half of the electorate was "socialist". That's a LOT of socialists. The word has lost it stigma.

Now of course, they WEREN'T socialists. Far from it. But overuse HAS taken the sting out of the demonizing words, including liberal and that's a good thing.

8. I love this quote from Kennedy
It describes my idea of a liberal, perfectly. I guess that makes sense. That's where I took my beliefs as a liberal from.
