City of Newburgh removes rebel flag from work site
CITY OF NEWBURGH — A modified Confederate flag printed with the words "The South Will Rise Again" flew on Friday above a work site inside the gates of the city's wastewater treatment plant.

Benilda Armstead-Jones, chairwoman of the city's Human Rights Commission, said she heard about the flag on Thursday and went to see for herself. It was on a pole above a shed where crews doing soil remediation as part of a coal-tar cleanup keep their tools.

"This is a statement," Armstead-Jones said, "and it's on public property."

People, mostly residents of southern states, have long argued about the significance of the red and blue "Stars and Bars" that have come to represent a proud heritage to some and the worst depths of a racist history to others.

1. To me, the rebel flag is like a Tapout shirt.
It makes it easy to spot the douchebags. I think we can let the First Amendment and public shame and ridicule take care of stuff like this.

4. When I was at CSU
pranksters would put all sorts of stickers on campus vehicles..

I had a forestry major roomie that drove around with a Homer Simpson "Hmmmm. Purple.." decal on his campus vehicle..

6. Very rare to see the stars and bars up here
How strange now to see the flag fly on city property in a minority city at that..

7. Yes, it is, but head west into the hills, and I'll bet you see it. I saw it in the hills of Vermont
when I used to go up there.

Dumb asses like rebels. And, as there are fewer blacks in Upstate and Vermont, they don't really give a shit about other things the flag implies.

3. WTF is a rebel flag doing in NY?

If you sympathize with the South, at least live there. Let us escape your stupid racism and revisionist history up here.

(aimed at whoever planted the flag, not the DU poster)

10. I'm from NY
We have Rebel Flags all over the place and you can rest assured that every last one of them is owned by a Klansman.

13. I have seen them in the city as well but not that often
As far as where in NY are rebel flags, well drive up to Yonkers, pick a random direction and start driving. You will find plenty of rebel flags along your way. Hell drive up RT 28 to the Adirondacks (seriously; it is a beautiful stretch of road through part of the Catskills, Leatherstocking region and southern portion of the Adirondacks.)
