Voucher cap is reached

Voucher cap is reached (Ohio)

For the first year since the program began, more applications for private-school vouchers were submitted than are available.

The state set aside up to 14,000 vouchers through the Educational Choice Scholarship program to allow students in struggling public schools to attend private ones at no cost.

As of this afternoon, 14,491 applications had been counted. Of those, 10,560 were renewal applications for students currently using a voucher and 3,931 were new applicants. The deadline to apply is midnight.

This school year, about 11,600 are being used in 279 private schools statewide. High-school students can get up to $5,000. Younger students can use up to $4,250 and parents must make up the difference for schools that charge higher tuition.

1. Hopefully the program will collapse under its own weight
I am all for private schools.

And any parent who wants to send their child to one with their own money, or money from their children's grandparents is encouraged to go for it. Don't ask for my tax dollars to fund it.

2. Especially religious schools.
I don't want my tax money going to support religious education.
