Three Charter Schools Suddenly Announce Closure (Placer County, CA)
Apr 16, 2010 3:45 pm US/Pacific
Three Charter Schools Suddenly Announce Closure

LINCOLN, Calif. (CBS13) ― Parents and students were stunned to hear that three popular charter schools are closing down -- not at the end of the school year, but in just a few days.

Five weeks before the end of the year, hundreds of Horizon Charter school parents and students received a letter announcing classes at three campuses will end next Tuesday. No further explanation was provided.

Every single parent CBS13 talked to on Wednesday said they loved the education their child gets at the schools, making the sudden announcement even more shocking.

"There's going to be no classroom, how are they going to have school finals?" said parent Drew Young.

School officials said they were "disappointed" at having to close on such short notice, but decided to wait to make the announcement until they conferred with legal counsel and developed a plan to continue educating students after the doors are closed.

snip...
The closures are the result of a state law regulating charter schools with multiple campuses in different regions. At least 50.1 percent of the charter school's students are required to live in the county where the charter was established -- Horizon only has 35 percent of students living in the county, according to the Placer County Superintendent.

1. Yeah, let's PRIVATIZE education
When the going gets tough, the scammers fold the tents and steal away into the night...

Wonder how long before we get news of pending lawsuits surfacing just before the closures.

4. Wait, the problem was that the schools were so popular people were driving the kids over from
another county?

Okay, I looked it up, the schools are in Roseville and Lincoln, so I assume the kids from other counties are mostly coming from northern Sacramento county, which isn't far away and happens to have a lot of seriously awful schools. I'd definitely drive my kid to Roseville for school if I had to send him to Highlands or Rio Linda or, god forbid, Grant.
