JACKSON, Tenn. — A white supremacist has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for conspiring to kill then-presidential candidate Barack Obama and dozens of other black people.


U.S. District Judge J. Daniel Breen on Thursday sentenced 19-year-old Paul Schlesselman of Helena-West Helena, Ark. He had pleaded guilty in January.

Twenty-one-year-old co-defendant, Daniel Cowart of Bells, Tenn., also pleaded guilty and is awaiting sentencing.

Authorities have described the pair as white supremacist skinheads who hatched a plan to go on a cross-country robbery and killing spree that would end with an attack on Obama in 2008.

Their plan was to kill 88 African-Americans and behead 14 others before trying to take out Obama. The numbers 88 and 14 are symbolic in the white supremacist movement.

This person is undeniably a mad with hate, would be mass-murderer and assassin, but all the references to him being "purty" and effeminate etc. are disgusting enough , and you would think to be beneath us, as a progressive community. But no matter who it is, or how despicable he is, laughing about the prospect of another person being raped; very possibly gang-raped, and on a regular basis, is something that shocks me every time I see sentiments like that expressed here, and this is far from the first time. On some level, this is not so different from saying a woman was "asking for it". This violent lunatic should be sent away for a long time, and I agree with those who say ten years is not nearly long enough, but many people , on DU and elsewhere, think it's funny that men are raped regularly if they are in prison, no matter what the crime.

I don't have sympathy for this guy. I tried to be clear about that, calling him a despicable would-be mass murderer etc. My point was more general, that I see progressive, intelligent people on DU excusing and making jokes about human beings being raped, and if it's OK to them for this guy to be raped because he's in prison, then by that logic, it's OK for rape to be part of the consequences of being convicted of any crime and then being incarcerated for whatever crime you've been convicted of. And I also agreed that ten years was far too short of a sentence. So my concerns were not with this vile piece of human excrement per se, but a more general concern that we as progressives should be above commenting on a man, no matter who he is, or how vile he is, being "effeminate" nor joking about, not to mention gleefully supporting, prison rape.

21. Our prison system is a vicious feedback look. It only helps itself by creating more criminals...

... so that they can grow their business. It is sick.

If we had an iota of common sense, we should put people like this asshole to work to rebuild and clean up our inner city ghettoes. Have them work all day, then sleep in prison, rinse repeat. They should be so exhausted that at the end of the day, they're glad to be back on their prison cell. They also get to see first hand the reality of the people they hate, and they get to pay their debt to society.

In our current system, these assholes are left to their own devices the whole day, and we know idle hands are the playground of the devil. They need to pay back their debt to society, and sitting in a prison quad does nothing... in fact it is totally counter productive. Chances are that he will either get killed or beaten up, so he will have to side up with even more extreme skin heads for protection, or he will have to do something monumentally stupid and inhumane to become a "hero" for their cause. And then the cycle will continue.
