One Day You're Gonna Wake Up America-But If NOT Soon-It Will Be Far Too Late
Edited on Thu May-03-07 06:15 PM by kpete
One day you’re gonna wake up, America, and realize how far it’s all gone. But if that day isn’t very soon, it won’t matter.

One Day You're Gonna Wake Up

by David Michael Green Page 1 of 2 page(s)

http://www.opednews.com

One day you’re gonna wake up and wish you had a government that could simply and competently do the basic things it was designed for. A government that could protect you from foreign attack, that could come to your rescue after a devastating hurricane, that could properly manage a new program or other people’s security. An administration that didn’t pervert the purpose of every agency within the government to its opposite, using civil rights lawyers to fight civil rights, for example, or the EPA to protect polluters.

One day you’re gonna wake up and cry out for simple justice, blindly applied without bias. And perhaps you’ll remember when that principle died. When your country stood by and watched the politicization of its judicial system for purposes of partisanship, and said nothing. When it stood by and watched its highest law enforcement officials in the land lie about their failing memory of events and pretended to believe that was acceptable.

..................

One day you’re gonna wake up and want very badly to run outside and scream in anger about a government that long ago stopped serving your interests in favor of the narrow interests of a tiny oligarchy. But instead you’ll stay inside and keep your scream tucked safely in your belly. Because you’ll know that in your country dissent has long since been outlawed, on pain of torture and death. You’ll remember concepts like due process, limitations on government search, seizure and wiretapping, habeas corpus, trial by peers, legal representation and prohibitions against cruel and unusual punishment as historical artifacts no longer even taught in schools.

On day you’re gonna wake up and want so badly to change governments. You’re gonna treasure the concept of democracy like no Soviet dissident ever did. You’re gonna crave the opportunity to own your own government, to make your own societal choices, to make a change of direction never before so desperately necessary. And you’re gonna wonder why you didn’t speak up as you watched first-hand the dismantling of the democracy you had been handed by previous generations of patriots. You’re gonna wish you had been patriotic enough yourself to demand, above all else, free and fair elections, and you’re gonna shake your head in puzzlement at how you stood by watching in silence those that patently were not.

16. So, what do we do about it?
Do we just post our anger and sadness or get out in the streets and storm DC???

Rhetorical question.

3. What I truly find sad is that those of us who have been paying
attention to all that's going on and are trying hard to overcome the lunacy will suffer more....we'll see it coming. Others who aren't paying attention won't be happy but may figure they couldn't have done anything about it and accept the situation. I know we'll beat ourselves up over it and probably won't have DU to commiserate.

4. great artical and so true
I do fear tha those who paid attention with all that has gone wrong will be the ones who suffer the most and really when they have put all effort into trying to make a change and find not enough people listened . In the end we all go down with the ship with america painted across the sides .

I have a gut feeling we are not far from losing everything while only the rich will be able to survive what's ahead and be able to live without fear if they keep their mouths shut .

It won;t take much for the worst to happen since it is already so close now .

5. I was just thinking earlier this evening ...
perhaps the biggest mistake by Americans after Vietnam and Watergate, was that we wanted the politicians to sweep America's real Nightmare under the radar. Otherwise we couldn't go on believing the American Dream anymore.

6. The capacity for denial and delusion is such that many will
still tell themselves that America is the greatest nation on earth...they'll adapt to tyranny, just as they are adapting now, and claim that what they are living is just democracy matured.

Bush has exposed just how far Americans can be pushed, stripped of their rights, and slapped down with outrage upon outrage....and the ugly truth is, Americans will take even more without ever lifting a finger to stop it.

Bush is the warm up act for the real tyranny to come. Bush is just getting America ready....and America continues to pretend that nothing is wrong other than a bad President - when Bush is ever so much more than merely a bad President.

Bush didn't just happen overnight and he didn't just come out of nowhere. Something was already wrong with our country - otherwise, Bush would have never been allowed to take office.

There is something deeply wrong with a country that can't use its own laws to remove a criminal President from office.

Bush is symptom of a long standing rot...

18. Some wonder where Hillary and Obama fit in the continuum.
Why is it that Ron Paul and Mike Gravel (considered to be the two wing-nuts of the parties) are the only presidential candidates that don't scare me?

Seriously.

Well, Dennis doesn't really scare me either :)

21.  That's true
What I see and hear are many people asking what can we do and no one has an answer other then just to hope that some elected official will save us all , I'm sorry to say it will take much more than that .

Bush and his crime family have pushed us so far and we have done nothing as a nation to get this bum out and it will continue on as long as we sit back and allow it .

10. One day you’re gonna wake up
and want to get the hell out of your rotting, repressive country. You’re gonna remember a time when that wasn’t true. But, oddly enough, you’ll find that other countries remember too. They’ll remember your country’s arrogance, its unilateralism, its walls, its racism, and its politicized abuse of immigrants. And they’ll remember how your government undermined and violently replaced theirs whenever corporations from your country had their profits threatened. You’re gonna want to leave, but there will be nowhere you’ll be welcome. You’re gonna find out that walls can face both directions.

I will say it again, those who can, should be making plans now to get out.
We have. Hubby and I are building a retirement home in Panama. We have
obtained our permanent resident visas, which are good indefinitely.
Our current plan is to most likely move in late 2008, after our youngest son
has graduated high school and entered college.

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

19. Amen to that kpete!!! Writing to Congress Again.
I have already written to my congresspeople urging them to impeach. Fat lot of good that did. At least my rep wrote back what did not look like a form letter. I will have to do it again after reading this. It is so dead on.

And yet, in other countries, they have thousands and thousands in the streets. America is in a sad state of affairs. We need a huuuuuge groundswell of protests.

Thanks for all your efforts kpete!

During my last 7 years of life I've never imagined not applauding such an article, much to my daily horror.
