Priest Calls For Pope’s Resignation
http://www.kwtx.com/news/headlines/90879324.html?ref=324

EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass. (April 14, 2010)—The Rev. James Scahill, a Roman Catholic priest from western Massachusetts who's critical of the church's handling of the clergy sexual abuse crisis has called on Pope Benedict to resign.

In his Sunday sermon, Scahill, of St. Michael's parish in East Longmeadow, Mass., also demanded greater protection of children and greater accountability from church hierarchy. snip

Parish Council president Thomas LaMondia told The Boston Globe that the congregation was generally supportive of Scahill's message, but a spokesman for the Diocese of Springfield called Scahill's statements "unfortunate."

2. Somehow the word 'recant' comes to mind.
With a choice of excommunication and defrocking if he doesn't. Or maybe just a quiet posting to Outer Slobovia or something.

20. I'm wondering -- all these postings about how the pope should leave, including dying
Is it really fueled by outrage over the molestations - or bigotry towards the church itself?

There is a really deep level of Catholic hatred on this board. And I include your little *papal deaths* scenario in it. Having been brought up by a Catholic who faced *Catholics need not apply* signs when she was looking for work in the 1920's - this country has a dark history of discrimination and hatred of the Catholic church.

I certainly smell huge whiffs of that on these threads. Using a horrendous situation to let the bigotry fly is not cool at all.

21. This country has a history of deep hatred towards much more than
Catholics. Try every single minority, immigrant or religion that isn't white, male and Christian. Starting with Native Americans this country has much to be ashamed of. Bigotry on all levels should be addressed and fought, not just the particular group one happens to belong to.

25. I wasn't disputing you, just adding to your observation

It seems we have a lot of growing up to do as a country. I believe we must fight bigotry as a whole or otherwise we'll get caught up in the parts that pertain only to us. Your observation is a good one and it shouldn't go ignored. I was making an attempt to respond so your post so it wouldn't just be another drop of water lost in a torrential rainstorm.

22. Read again, the criticism is squarely against the pope and those who enabled abuse
that's not about hating Catholics.

23. on absolutely all the threads it's *just* about the pope?
Hogwash.

Sorry -- but the amount of "righteous fervor" by some on these postings are *not* just about the pope. There has been historically IN THIS COUNTRY a segment with a deep-seated hatred of all things Catholic. And while it's not all who fall into this category - there is a vein of obsessive hatred that runs deep in some on this forum. And the amount of glee they post towards the unlikely possibility of the Church *falling* points towards that bigotry.

19. Good for him
Look for him to be punished by the powers that be, though.

Speaking truth to power has traditionally not gone over so well with the RC hierarchy.
