I dont recall the Democrats being able to block any legislation when
Edited on Tue Apr-13-10 09:43 AM by INdemo
Repukes had control. Now it seems that every piece of legislation the Repukes are able to block or delay just because they are Republicans and are able to do this just because we have a bunch of spineless Democrats with a Majority...Every single spending bill sailed through Congress that financed Bush's wars without Democrats even flinching..Now here we are with this unemployment extension being held up by Republicans whose only motive is delay this bill because they can and because we have these spineless Democrats that just dont want to use their power and maneuver around them..Sure the Majority is less than 60 votes but Democrats need to grow a pair and use the Majority or lose it...
I am so disappointed ..We worked, we contributed, and we thought finally..We are beginning to take our country back( 2006)and then in 2008 (WOW!)
And now with a Democrat in the White House and the Majority in congress its still a battle for the working class..And it is bull shit..Its like we dont have a Democratic Party anymore..We have Republicans... then we have Republicans

1. They ran most everything through on reconcilliation I believe
plus there were always a few 'democrats' more than ready to vote with the republicans.

6. Dem congress was consistently URGED by Clinton/Lieberman wing (DLC) to cooperate with Bush and GOP

on most of his policies throughout Bush's reign, especially with the wars that are bankrupting this nation.

I also clearly remember how 'Dems' like Schumer condemned Kerry's and Kennedy's filibuster of Alito....even planting anti-filibuster stories in the press, and even questioning Kerry's motives for blocking Alito. Behind closed doors, Schumer was joined by HRC, who later added her name to the filibuster after her office was bombarded with angry phonecalls from REAL Dems.

2. I think you've hit on the reason many Dems are disgusted with their
own party, and why Independents are gravitating back to the Repubs. I don't think it has nearly as much to do with policy, or the national deficit, or any of that, as it does have to do with Dems inability to get things done.

4. Dems rarely tried unless there was overwhelming public support and even then rarely
like Bush's push to privatize Social Security.

5. So you are saying they are ineffective both when in majority and when in minority,
I couldn't agree more.

9. they are even ''ineffective'' at pretending to be the opposition party when they bow and scrape to
the GOP even when they had a supermajority in the Senate.

7. As RuralLib points out they did a lot of stuff through Reconciliation. Now they claim
reconciliation is unconstitutional or some other nonsense.

10. The difference is that Democrats believed that the government needed to function...
Republicans do not. They do not believe in any government that they do not control and will move to shut it down.

Also, it is poltical. Being the party of no appeals ot their base and even a lot of independents. They think it will help them get back in power, where they never say no.
