Things you shouldn’t have to explain to grown-ups

snip//

Ask yourself this: Would anyone on the right give a shit what Palin said if she looked like Olympia Snowe? Nope.

Snowe is what they call a RINO these days, but there are female politicians every bit as wingnutty as Palin—Ginny Brown-Waite and Virginia Foxx, for example. No one gives a rat’s ass how they feel about Obama’s nuclear arms reduction proposal. Why? Because they don’t generate starbursts.

What we’re seeing on the GOP side with the Palin phenomenon isn’t progress, at least, not the kind to which we should aspire. It’s a beauty pageant with an expanded platform statement consisting wholly of red meat.

So while Marsh laments the lack of a lefty Palin, I think it’s cause for celebration. There’s no lefty Sarah Palin because Democrats don’t get all tingly and shouty over reasonably well-preserved 40-something mombies who like to shoot moose in the face. It’s just not our thing.

Even if there were a woman politician who boldly asserted lefty positions, made us cheer by trash-talking wingnuts on TV and lived what our base considers an exemplary lifestyle—say if Alan Grayson were a woman—I still don’t think you’d see liberals lining up to get his autograph, rushing to salons to mimic his beehive or emptying Lens Crafters of Grayson-style specs. To our credit, we’re just less like Jonas Brothers-smitten tweener girls than wingnuts are (most of us, anyway).

1. It would be nice if physical appearance was unimportant in real life, but that's not reality,
as much as we might like it to be. The truth is that the physically attractive have an easier path in life and generally make more money than the rest of us less physically attractive people.

2. It would also be nice if the wingers weren't so shallow. But I hear
you; it's not fair, it just 'is'.

3. We have Rachel Maddow. Rachel is not only brilliant

and incredibly nimble when debating, she looks fabulous on camera.

And let's face it, that helps.

Always has. Always will.

Of course Rachel isn't a politician. So I guess I can't refute the OP. :)

Still, the good news is we have Rachel Maddow. :loveya:

5. Sarah Palin is a cross between a Blow Up Sex doll and a Weather Girl.
It's not about beauty, it's about sex. The Republican Party has nothing to offer anyone making under $50,000 a year so they give them a stripper with zipper tits and tight short skirts and fuck-me heels.

Their base is just too stupid to understand that she is never going to take her clothes off for them. Or that while they're looking up her skirt the pukes are picking their pockets.

6. Sex sells
the Republicans are reduced to having dick-tease as their selling card

The last 20 minutes of O'Reilly every night is Bill with some blonde on mainly for the old men to have something to cleanly watch and still get a thrill.

7. So true.
It's a beauty pageant on FOX News too. Look at the women they have giving their fair and balanced news. Mostly blonde attractive women. No Candy Crowley's or Barb Starr's.

i.e. the typical wingnut voter. I once heard a social psychologist explain student attitudes toward female professors. The upshot was that the less capable male college students (the ones who were there only because their parents made them go), liked only two types of female professors: the ones who could be thought of as "hot" and the ones who acted motherly. The rest of us were out of luck as far as that population was concerned.

That same immature attitude carries over into the typical right-wing voter.

Wingnut women like Palin and Bachmann because, as Studs Terkel said of Reagan voters, she "makes it OK to be stupid."

11. Then that wouldn't explain why the wingnuts aren't worshipping at
Virginia Foxx's feet. She's as wingnutty as they come but doesn't get a percentage of the coverage Palin and Bachmann get. I think it's all about the looks.

13. I'm a male heterosexual with a pulse...
... but Palin does absolutely nothing for me. I guess that's why I'm not a Republican. My perception of a woman's beauty is way too intertwined with her intelligence and values. As a result, Palin is a great big turnoff for me.

Now Naomi Klein on the other hand...

26. Well, would Arnold have been able to be Governor of California if
he didn't have that star power? Also, I don't think Obama would be President today if looked like Al Sharpton. Al's speech abilities are on a par with Obama's if you've ever actually listened to what he says. I have always argued that we need to identify those among the politicians, and future politicians who not only have the education and training to do the job, but who look like rock stars. I think Rachel Maddow is an example of this. Brains and good looks although she hasn't entered the political arena yet. Unfortunately, Americans are shallow and too used to seeing beautiful people, acting like ordinary people, on the TV and movie screens. They can't look at a Lincoln anymore and see the brilliance behind the homely face.
