"ARE MEN NECESSARY?" - a book by Maureen Dowd
.
.
.

I was gonna post in the books forum - but where?

fiction? - non-fiction?

or maybe in the Womens forum

GBLT ?

I think ALL these groups/forums would like this book

I'm only on page 30

and it is an intriguing writing already

"Are men afraid of smart, successful women? Why did feminism fizzle? Why are so many of today's women freezing their faces and emotions in an orgy of plasticity? Is "having it all" just a cruel hoax?

In this witty and wide-ranging book, Maureen Dowd looks at the state of the sexual union, raising bold questions and examining everything from economics and politics to pop culture and the "why?" of the Y chromosome. These new writings will delight her devoted readers-and anyone trying to sort out the chaos that occurs when sexes collide."

102. There's a reason sexual reproduction is the norm in the animal world-- infectious disease.
Sex is easier, faster, cheaper and more fun than cloning. And it results in more genetic diversity, which is critical for such a large population, cosmopolitan species as our which supports thousands of infectious organisms.

have their genes combined and produce a female child.

119. I would think that a "Book Lover" would know enough to read a whole book before judging it
.
.
.

I DID read the whole book, despite my temptations to drop it -

If you had spent 30 seconds to check my profile you would know that I'm a male - ergo

"Mr."

I'm not sure what "get off the cross, . . . , we need the wood"

means

Out of thousands of books I've read, I only stopped reading less than a dozen -

they were all fiction, and had so many names involved that I couldn't follow the story.

I NEVER put down a book because I just didn't like what I was reading - -

sorta the same reason I don't use ignore on DU

I wanna KNOW what those that are pissed off at me are saying - even if I have no intention or desire to respond.

I don't close my mind to ideas that I don't like.

All I heard was, "What the hell is that thing?"

So, I picked it up, sat it in my palm, and showed it to her.

"OK," she said. "Are there lots of them around here?"

"Some," I said.

"Well, then," she allowed, "I guess I'd better learn to deal with them, then."

so I'll probably pass on what may be good and useful info just for the fact she brazenly baited like a yellow journalist. sick of this kind of stuff from all sides.

not so - to my surprise!

I have a half-assed method of choosing my library books, which I read on average about 5 a week.

I'll pick 2 - 3 from authors I am familiar with, and then 2 -3 from "unknowns"

keeps me "fresh" methinks

or - - maybe just consistently inconsistent . . .

31. I don't think Dawd is boring at all, as I said I like her caustic and snarky ways
she's no light weight in the intelligence department.

but having that title keeps me away from reading that no matter how great it is. The title is meant to be controversial and spur on that old stupid battle of he vs. she, right off the hop. Imagine a man writing a book and titling it similar.

It's surprisingly juvenile for her to do this - maybe thats her scthick all along as I don't really follow her that closely.

sorry to repeat myself, but I have many many choices of things to read and I can dismiss for any reason I feel is worthy. Thisis a dismiss.

I'm so tired of the 'us v them' meme. We can be different and still be ok.

As far as men being the big bad spider/bug killers - whatever, I've always been the spider/bug killer in our house. I've been widowed for about 8 years now, and I still miss my husband, but it's not because of any he or she gender biased roles.

I yearn for the day when we can accept what all genders contribute and the unique roles we play in the larger picture and not demonize one role or another.

STILL not sure what or even IF she will make some conclusions.

So far - it's basically history, with some phrases/episodes that make me chuckle or say "oh yeah" . .

I'm sorta expecting a surprise ending . .

maybe she will make no definitive conclusions to the question that is the title

oh yeah - I've been tempted to peek at the last chapter

but that would sorta take the intrigue out of the whole read.

Methinks it may be the kind of book I will want to read again AFTER I see the end.

Few books do that for me

From reading the thread here - no one else has read it - so I most likely will not share the ending

but I might make a hint at it

50. And speaking of penis envy
Is it not far more likely that men would have birth envy - that men would be envious of women for being able to give the most precious gift of all - life?

The prime motivating factor in the universe - creation itself?

In fact, if you look at patriarchies, are they not all about trying to usurp the original ability to give life, to be responsible for creation itself, to a male figure, when in reality we all know that it is the feminine that is the real creator of life?

I'm just sayin', I mean, I know Freud was a genius and all that - but penis envy? I have never heard a worse BS theory in all my years!

And to think much of modern society is built around his warped theory, it's no wonder our societies are falling into violence and over-competitiveness, with complete disregard for nurturing each other.

But I think you may be closer to solving the mystery.

Even with their obsessions, males make life interesting. Some of them make me laugh. I jam with some great male musicians and have made love to a few maybe.

And back to the Penis Envy thing. I always felt sorry for guys having to lug all that junk around and protect it. I was glad my stuff was tucked up safe and sound lol

As a feminist writer she's really never had much to say to working class women, but whateveah. If you say she has interesting commentary on W and the goings on at the White House during that era, I'll take your word for it.

The title of the book is typical attention-whoring, and nausea-invoking. Guess Dowdy's hoping to get a few stray man-haters who don't know what she's about to buy the book.

77. From the perspective of a man.
When talking about men having power or control in a society, I think it is pretty simple.

Not sure if anyone else has had this thought, or if is part of any writings, but this is how I see it.

It is pretty simple.

Men want to get laid. That's about it.

Ok from there you have to look at society, if women are equal, and have equal rights, well then women are going to be with who they want, and people in status positions won't be getting laid.

Same thing with money, if people with money are not respected, and people with money do not have power, then one of the attractions they have, security of money, goes away, and they don't get laid.

I think when Paul went into Rome and started telling the women they don't have to sleep with their husbands, it was not about celibacy. It was because Roman men were buying slaves to sleep with, and the slaves were told they had to, it was almost an accepted thing by almost everyone. And much of the marriages were not about love and intimacy.

Paul went in there speaking of the dignity of people, and that people should be together for reasons of love and intimacy, not arranged marriages not of love, and many Roman marriages of the elite were not about love but about status. Interestingly if Paul was celibate, that allowed him to make such comments, since much of what he did probably hurt his chances of getting laid, but in my view helped many women. Which is interesting also.

So I think the women's rights thing is pretty simple, most guys want to get laid, and many need some control because they don't have whatever it is that women they want would see as attractive. Then they feel bad that they are not attractive, so they go all women hating, all because they really want to have female companions and get laid.

It might be crass, and not sure what other people are posting, but I think it comes down to men wanting to get laid.

I believe in equality for everyone. But while women don't get paid as much as men, there have been studies to show they control a greater portion of the world's wealth than men. And a mentor of mine stated the obvious point that women control 100% of their vaginas. Women can sleep with almost any man she wants, while men only get to sleep with the women who let them. It's not fair, and I want my sexual rights to be as equal as women's!

Yes, men are necessary. The new feminism says that they don't own or control more than women do like they still do. I think our elected representatives should be divided right down the middle between the two sexes by law regardless of their political affiliation, but no one is going to agree with me on this one.

"We've got a generation now who were born with semi-equality. They don't know how it was before, so they think, this isn't too bad. We're working. We have our attache' cases and our three piece suits. I get very disgusted with the younger generation of women. We had a torch to pass, and they are just sitting there. They don't realize it can be taken away. Things are going to have to get worse before they join in fighting the battle."

120. Bricks & stones may break my bones...
Seems like right wingers use physical violence and verbal threats. They even seem proud of their acts of violence and hatred. But they profess to be 'Christians' so I guess it's ok when they assault someone, use degrading racial words, spit on someone, or throw a brick through a congresswoman's office, all intended to terrorize.

140. Finished the book!
.
.
.

I wasn't gonna tell the ending

changed my mind

last line in the book

"So,are men necessary?"

The "theme" of the book is not what I, or I suspect many of the readers of this thread,

or the book concluded.
