I hadn't thought of JB Stoner in years. I grew up in SC, but we got our TV from 2 Augusta GA stations. He ran for Governor when I was in college and had ads on TV. Before each ad the station would basically run an apology, saying that parents might not want to let their children listen to the ad and that they were legally required by the Constitution to allow him to buy air time. Then this barely literate hick would come on with two confederate flags behind him and relish throwing out the N word. I particularly remember one statement: "The only reason n*****s want integration is because they want our white women." He was beaten in the primary by Jimmy Carter. He had a law degree and was on James Earl Ray's defense team. He was also investigated for several black church bombings and fires. He died about 5 years ago.
