update #1 on Alabama nuke plant event

http://hisz.rsoe.hu/alertmap/index.php?smp=&lang=eng

Tennessee Valley Authority officials say lightly radioactive water leaked from a tank at the Browns Ferry nuclear plants. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said Thursday the problem wasn't classified as an emergency and no one was hurt. The leak Wednesday was stopped and the dirt into which the water soaked was collected to be sent to a containment facility in Utah. The spill occurred at one of the five large tanks that supply water to the turbines generating steam for the plant's three nuclear reactors. Don Jernigan with TVA says less than 1,000 gallons of tritium water leaked out because of a valve problem in the top of the tank. He said that's about 1/100th of the radioactive material found in an exit sign at a movie theater.

wonder why he said that last sentence? comments like that are not usually made in these reports.

1. To put in perspective for the uneducated who can't tell a real problem...
from a less-than-minor incident.

3. Comment made to put things in perspective
Evidently the radiatioactive material in the water is so tiny, there's little danger from the spill. I'll see if I can get some of it to sell on EBay.

4. This just in: Radioactive Watch Sold on Ebay!
Edited on Fri Apr-09-10 10:24 AM by MineralMan
A HAZMAT team was called to the home of an Ebay seller to confiscate an antique watch that had highly-radioactive number markers on its dial. The watch, an 17k gold, vintage Rolex, was valued at $7500. After testing by the HAZMAT team, the watch was confiscated and placed in a sealed, lead-lined container for transport to a secure storage site. However, when the container was opened, the watch was no longer inside the container. A thorough investigation is underway.

7. Did you see the radioactive waste that made people "ill" in India?
"Five people fell seriously ill after being exposed to some “radioactive material”, reportedly present in medical waste equipment at a scrap dealer’s shop in Mayapuri in west Delhi on Thursday night, police said. The skin of two persons reportedly turned completely black. They also had burn injuries and rashes all over their bodies.
Police said the victims had been exposed to radiation for the past few days. “These people were sleeping in a room where the medical waste equipment had been stored. They showed allergic reactions and started vomiting when exposed to the radiation. We have cordoned off the area around the factory as a precautionary measure,” said Ajay Kashyap, joint commissioner of police (southern range). They were sent to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). Preliminary investigations revealed the waste material had come from a city hospital. A team of experts were sent to the factory where the incident took place and the police were investigating the source of the medical equipment. “We have seized the equipment and sent it for further examination. We are taking the help of researchers and experts to know what caused the radiation,” said Sharad Agarwal, DCP (west). The shop is located in a congested locality and police suspect that more people could be affected. "
