The Onion: Virginia Governor Declares April Confederate History Month
Arousing the ire of civil rights leaders and many residents of his state, Virginia governor Robert F. McDonnell has declared April to be Confederate History Month. What do you think?

Susan Pollit

"I can't think of a more beautiful time and place to revel in defeat than Virginia in April."

Joe Cook

"Take that, big federal health care bill."

Keith Hill

"Slavery shouldn't stop us from celebrating Confederate History Month anymore than terrorism stops us from celebrating Bin Laden’s Day."

1. I am so proud to be a Virginian today.
Bob McDonnell and Ken Cucinelli - wow. Plus, Eric Cantor hails from here. We also have some of the most bigoted laws on the books when it comes to equal rights for GLBTers.
:puke:

2. And even the homophobic laws that were struck down your AG says he
will enforce!

5. Yep, I know.
He sent a letter to colleges/universities around the state, letting them know it's A-OK with him if they discriminate on the basis sexual orientation. Nice. Then, he tries to back-peddle - for now. He'll probably use his hate in some election ad in the next election.

And yeah, McDonnell renewed an anti-discrimination law signed by Tim Kaine (who is also no great shakes in the equal rights department, btw), but removed sexual orientation from the language. Fuck and goddammit.

I need to win the lottery, and move the hell out of this state - and maybe country. I am so sick of these ignorant and hateful hillbillies. :evilfrown:

6. And even though the SCOTUS struck down sodomy laws, he said
there still on the books so he will enforce them. POS.

I hadn't heard about those sodomy laws. I'm torn between crying and drinking right now. Solved - I'll do both. Thanks for the info!

After that, start researching progressive candidates for the next gubernatorial election. :hi:

Edit to add: I'd heard about the laws themselves, just not the decision to ENFORCE them.

9. Yeah, I think there's still a post about it in the GLBT Forum...
I'm paraphrasing...he said something like, "Those laws are still on the books and haven't been rescinded, so they are to be enforced." In other words, make it hell for people...he'd never win a case, but he'd put people through a long, arduous and expensive process.

3. State motto change?
From "Virginia Is For Lovers" to "Virginia Is For Slavers"?

11. I know one thing - Virginia ain't for visitors
I will never go anywhere near that state.
Maybe if a few thousand people changed their vacation and business plans, Virginians would get the message. The civil war and slavery and Jim Crow and discrimination are relics of the past.

8. Sic semper tyrannis -- change to sic semper, sic semper ?
Seems like a Roman might use that to mean "same old same old".
