Steve King Denounces Humane Society As 'Vegetarians With An Agenda'
Rep. Steve King (R-IA) is making one thing very clear: As a representative from an agricultural, meat-producing state, he really does not like the Humane Society.

King released a statement yesterday criticizing the presence of the Humane Society at a recent National 4-H Conference. In the release, King says the Humane Society has a hidden vegetarian agenda "to take meat off everyone's table in America."

"The Humane Society of the United States is a political machine masquerading as an umbrella organization for local humane societies," King said.

4. he is not the only one who believes this
many of the people in my vet program agree with him b/c of HSUS's lack of financial support for shelters. i do not know if it is true, but the charge is that HSUS spends more money on lawyers than animals.

http://www.zimbio.com/Animal+Rights+Exposed/articles/nAD1VVeuA_i/No+Joke+HSUS+Gives+Less+1+Donations+Pet+Shelters

and it is important to know that it is probably not HSUS that runs your local shelter...

7. actually, some do
especially the large animal vet students. others have issue with what appears like their lack of financial support for shelters. HSUS does, however, support a great program called RAVS (rural area veterinary services - ruralareavet.org) that sends vet students to reservations to work on pets of local residents. personally, i see the need for HSUS as a watchdog group and i think their investigations are important. i wish they would spend more money on programs like RAVS and shelters, though -- and to fully disclose to donors where their money is going.

5. I'm ashamed to say that I didn't know much about him until now.
However, after reading his bio on Wiki, he is one evil and or disturbed slimeball.

There are too many things to choose from to illustrate his extreme RW ideals. However, these tidbits show a what a true wingnut really thinks (if he is capable of thought).

From Wikipedia bio:

Statements about Washington, D.C.
In June 2006, King stated, "My wife lives here with me, and I can tell you… she’s at far greater risk being a civilian in Washington, D.C., than an average civilian in Iraq."<17> King said that there were 45 violent deaths per 100,000 in Washington, D.C., in 2003 while he calculated that there were 27.51 per 100,000 in Iraq as a whole.<18> The Iraqi Health Ministry casualty survey, however, estimated 151,000 violent deaths in Iraq due to the war from 2003 to 2006, or roughly 162.37 per 100,000 per year.<19><20><21>

State Department appropriations
On June 21, 2007, King introduced an amendment to the $34 billion State and Foreign Operations bill to prohibit funds from being used by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi to travel to Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan or Syria.<22> When asked why the measure did not apply to Republican House members who had also made trips to the countries in question, King's spokesman replied that he was unsure whether that had been considered, or why it might not have been.

13. No. This argument is a big deal out in areas that are meat producers.
I've been hearing a lot about it over on the border collie boards where I post (I have border collies from working lines)

There is a big backlash there against the HS.

True or not? Hard to tell. There are definitely two sides to the argument.
