2. But all the signs are spelled correctly.
The quality of bigotry has certainly decreased in the last generation.

The company they contracted for the signs must have had a proofreader

6. Wrong decade
Edited on Thu Apr-08-10 09:04 PM by customerserviceguy
That's a 48 star flag in the picture, we had 50 stars by the 1960's, at least when bigots like George Wallace and Lester Maddox were stirring up racial hatred.

That looks like something from the desegregation days following Brown vs. Board of Education.

7. Good eye! Here it is...

... from 1954. I thought that photo looked familiar.

http://www.oxfordaasc.com/public/features/archive/0507/photo_essay.jsp?page=1

The commentary on the photo makes the observation that "the protesters carry American flags alongside placards declaring racial mixing to be 'communism' and 'the march of the antichrist' — a fascinating and disturbing mix of patriotism, prejudice, and fear."

8. Yep
that is where it was taken from.

It is still the same message of hate. Fox would have opposed Alaska and Hawaii if they were around in the 50s and 60s.

13. Here's one photograph w/text:

"Despite Governor Wallace's resistance, Vivian Malone and James Hood successfully enrolled at the University of Alabama. Although Hood eventually left to attend school in Michigan, Malone stayed and became the first African American to graduate from the university in 1965. Despite the hostility of many of her classmates, she thrived at the school and after graduating remained active in the civil rights movement throughout her life. In 1996 Malone was chosen by the George Wallace Foundation to be the first recipient of the Lureen B. Wallace Award of Courage, which she received from the former governor himself, three decades after their first confrontational meeting."

23. This is the part that had caught my eye:
"....In 1996 Malone was chosen by the George Wallace Foundation to be the first recipient of the Lureen B. Wallace Award of Courage, which she received from the former governor himself, three decades after their first confrontational meeting."

No, i don't think this was political hypocricy on the part of Wallace. I think he had a genuine spiritual conversion. Such things sometimes happen.

the day before Hawaii was admitted as the 50th state, and less than 2-months after the 49-star flag became official.

20. It's one of those things I look for in movies
The difference between the arrangement of stars in the 48 star and the 50 star flags is evident even from a small bit of the blue part, I'm one of those weirdos who looks along the corners and the edges of the motion picture screen to see if the set decorator got every detail right.

The movie that impressed me most in this respect (lately) was "Doubt". I really felt that I was back in Catholic school in the early 1960's! And Meryl Streep's performance was so good, I was able to forgive her for "Mama Mia"!

16. The 50-star flag became official on July 4, 1960
since Hawaii was admitted as the 50th state after July 4, 1959. Also, if these guys had already had 48-star flags (which were current up to July 4, 1959), maybe they wouldn't have bothered updating them.

Fox would have fucked things up so bad we wouldn't have made it
through the cold war or through the Cuban missile crisis.
