Callers flood ehealthinsurance asking 'Where's My Free Obama Care?'

There were a lot of people who were relieved to see President Obama's health care reform bill go through on March 25. But there are even more people who are confused about what it all means for them -- at least based on the calls to ehealthinsurance.com's expert advice hotline.

The company says they've received hundreds of thousands of calls from consumers, 80,000 of which came in in March. Most of the help-seekers are asking questions about when the bill takes effect and what changes they're going to see, but many are under the impression that they're going to get coverage for free, says Carrie McLean, a consumer specialist for the company.
"We actually started to get calls right when President Obama was elected from people thinking that things were going to change instantly. Once the bill passed, we started to get calls into our call center from people wanting to know if they were going to have 'free Obama care.' People are confused about what the bill means, and what's in it."

1. I'm calling bullshit
The fringe right has been floating this notion for a few days, and lo and behold, it suddenly "happens". I'm guessing that these calls are actually from Freepers, teabaggers, and such, trying to stir up a bogus story and foment confusion and anger.

9. I'm guessing the calls are 60/40
60% from teabaggers & 40% from people who weren't paying close attention and really did think we were getting something that would give Americans the kind of access to health care people in civilized countries have - not a bill that just transfers money to the insurance companies and reenforces the same crappy system we've had all along.

And yes, the 40% will get mad when it finally hits home that they've been scammed by both sides.

3. They're that out of touch.
After having to watch some TV while waiting to get my oil changed, I can see how a diet of that junk will make people stupid.

Edited on Thu Apr-08-10 03:30 PM by louis-t
I . CALL . BULLSHIT. Only repugs would call it "Obamacare". I have a repug aquaintance who constantly asks, facetiously, "where's MY bailout? I keep waitng, but no bailout. I check the mail, no check".

12. I wouldn't be so sure.

There were interviews of impoverished urban obama supporters on the evening news excited about "gettin' some of that Obama-money" shortly after the election. For the life of me, I can't figure out how they formulated "Obama won, so I'm gonna go get my obama-money..."

Yes, they were actually Obama supporters. :banghead: :wtf:

10. "but many are under the impression that they're going to get coverage for free"
Wait until these same (uninformed) people realize that not only will they have to pay premiums for insurance... to get care there will be deductables and copays. If they're "lucky" (unfortunate enough) the premiums will be subsidized. I think there a backlash that has yet to come and the GOP will really push this button as elections draw nearer.

Many people are, for the most part, only exposed to what the media tell them. They are ignorant to the finer points of politics.
Well, the media and congress (dems) have tried to paint HCR as this knight in shining armor.
Once people realize Obama gave them health insurance access (not actual health care) they will be dissapointed.
Once they realize they are MANDATED to buy this, they will be mad.

11. I remember when Clinton first got elected the same thing happened - He
said he would rebuild infrastructure - highways, bridges, etc-and the wingers were complaining that it hadn't been done the day after the election.

They just want to be assholes and they are quite good at it - practice, you know.

14. Shows how popular single payer would be.
Most people will be shocked to find out the HCR is simply a requirement to give more hard earned money to insurance companies.

15. I had to explain this to a lot of folks
It was so funny/ironic that in one of my online classes, we had to discuss what the government's role in health care should be and it was about a week after the health care bill passed.

I talked about the benefits of single payer and gave people links to websites.
A lot of people thanked me for my informative posts.

As I read a lot of people's posts, "The government should make sure everyone receives the health care they need, regardless of income or ability to pay" "Everyone should get health care" and things of this nature, I realized that the media really hyped this bill up to me more than it really is.

It isn't universal health care and it isn't even a universal expansion of health insurance.

BTW, these comments were made in AR. My class seems to be a mix of the young and the not so young. It was refreshing to hear these view points when our local media gives so much attention to Tea Baggers on parade.

16. Well, Rush, Hannity, Boortz, etc sure make it sound like it's a massive giveaway
They described HCR as if it were instant socialized medicine, just walk in and get treated, and don't worry about a bill.

Gosh, how uncivilized a system like THAT would be. :sarcasm:
