Bag ‘N Save fined $65K (child labor & will appeal)

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- A Nebraska grocery store chain has been fined more than $65,000 for violating child labor laws.

The U.S. Department of Labor says three Bag ‘N Save stores in Omaha and another in York allowed 16- and 17-year-old workers to operate power-driven bailers and compactors and a high-lift pallet jack. Federal law prohibits teen workers from using such equipment.

The department fined Bag ‘N Save $65,760. The grocery store chain is contesting.

Bag ‘N Save operates 12 grocery stores in Nebraska.

1. No doubt they were paid minimum wage too. This is dangerous equipment
that could have killed someone easily. Shame on them!

2. Well,
One has to wonder just how stupid you can be. Management screwed themselves on this one, all that equipment should have been clearly marked that no one under 18 can operate it. I know it is in my workplace and when the stickers get a bit faded they are replaced quickly. No one (absolutely No one) is allowed to touch a power lift without being certified as to it's safe operation in our backrooms and it's write up if they do.

3. Even the guy who owned the pizza shop I worked in as a teen knew to make sure
I didn't operate certain things (the meat slicer) until I turned 18.
