George Allen rallies GOP faithful in Roanoke
"The first question asked to George Allen had nothing to do with politics -- the reason for his Tuesday visit to Roanoke County -- but with his opinions on the Washington Redskins' trade for quarterback Donovan McNabb.

After all, the former governor and U.S. senator's late father was a longtime coach for the franchise, and his brother Bruce is now the team's general manager.

George Allen said the trade affected his Sunday plans: "On Sunday, I e-mailed Bruce and said, 'Hey, do you want to come over for some Easter pizza at our place?' He said he's waiting for a call on that trade. I said, 'All right. Good luck, I hope your Easter egg has what you wanted in it.' "

And George Allen -- whose new book, "The Triumph of Character: What Washington Can Learn From the World of Sports," is set for release in late May -- likes the move: "Donovan McNabb's a proven leader. He's got the third-best record of active quarterbacks, behind Brady and Peyton Manning ... the Redskins need a lot of improvement, and he's certainly a proven leader."

After handling that important question, Allen went on to rally about 60 Republicans in the Plantation on Sunnybrook around energy and health care issues in advance of this fall's congressional midterm elections.

Four years after his narrow loss to Jim Webb in a race for the Senate, Allen predicted that four Republicans will win back seats in Congress from Democrats in Virginia this November.

"I think we're going to pick up four good, common-sense conservatives in Virginia," Allen said. "We have a great chance of picking up the House and, I think, good chance of substantial gains in the U.S. Senate."

Allen stumped for one of the four -- Virginia House Majority Leader Morgan Griffith, who is seeking the Republican nomination to challenge U.S. Rep. Rick Boucher in the 9th Congressional District -- during the party lunch.

In addition, Allen said the 5th District seat of freshman U.S. Rep. Tom Perriello, D-Albemarle County, and a pair of seats in Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads are winnable for Republicans.

Griffith assailed Boucher for his work on cap-and-trade legislation that could result in higher energy costs if passed. He also criticized Boucher for not working hard enough to bring jobs to his district. Griffith, who currently lives in the 6th District but does not have to live in the 9th to run there, said that because of that, the 9th District will have to pick up about 65,000 people when it's redistricted -- a move that will likely put Griffith and others into the 9th.

"Many of you today who love having <6th District U.S. Rep.> Bob Goodlatte, and he is a great congressman ... will be surprised to find out next year that your congressman is not Bob Goodlatte but is in fact Morgan Griffith," Griffith said.

Allen, meanwhile, was vague about his own future beyond this year. He acknowledged that he has been asked to run for his old Senate seat against Webb in 2012, but has not yet decided whether to do so."
