WH asks reporters to wear yellow bracelets to support Snow, but cuts funds for cancer research
This is why the White House request to the press corps to wear the yellow bracelets to show support for Tony Snow is about as disgustingly hypocritical as you can get. Bush's budget has CUT funding for cancer research for the past two years. And don't even get me started on the people who have cancer who have no health insurance.

That said, I wish Tony Snow a complete recovery, but I also wish that he and others in the party of ME! ME! ME! (formerly known as the GOP) would learn a little something about compassion for others.

Funding for the National Cancer Institute had been going up steadily for a decade, but now President Bush wants to cut the funding for the second year in a row — this time by $40 million.

The newest cancer research may be especially threatened by these cuts. Money has always been tight. Even back in 2002, when the budget was growing, the government approved only one in five promising proposals for new research. Now only one in 10 is funded.

It's not only the research, but the researchers themselves that are affected. Some worry these cuts will have chilling effect on recruiting up-and-coming scientists.

"We're at jeopardy of losing a whole generation of scientists, of cancer researchers, and that's undoubtedly going to have an effect 10 years down the line," adds Dr. Ben Ho Park of Johns Hopkins' Kimmel Cancer Center.

1. research money
It's all health research, including traumatic brain injury research. How ironic, or maybe just cruel.

15. Just curious...
The yellow that you describe...is it the same hue of yellow that you find running down a chickenhawk neonut's back?

5. Doncha know?
Buying those yellow bracelets will somehow magically generate the millions Bush cut from cancer research! Just like buying those yellow ribbon bumper stickers magically gives the troops everything they need, from body armor to health care!

7. What about wearing black bracelets for all the reporters killed in Iraq/Afghanistan?
That would be a hell of a lot more appropriate.

13. Shh! We don't want the American people paying attention to THAT.
Or to the thousands of US military deaths, or to the hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilian deaths.

9. The yellow bracelet thing is fitting for this Administration.
Just a photo-op with no real substance behind the fluff...something they've shown they're good at over the years.

I hope Tony Snow has a full recovery.

14. Gee whiz, people
Have a heart, would you? Tony's got good enough health care coverage (no pre-existing condition exclusion for him) and sufficient personal wealth to pay for all his treatment. What's the matter with other cancer patients that they're not able to do the same thing? Let's all focus on Tony and go easy on him, because he's got it sooo tough.
