Apple Confirms Wi-Fi Issues with iPad
http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Apple-Confirms-WiFi-Issues-cnbc-2833015177.html?x=0&sec=topStories&pos=6&asset=&ccode=

Apple admits some iPad users may have trouble staying connected to the internet, confirming reports from customers who purchased the new devices over the weekend.

The first generation of iPads accesses the internet using Wi-Fi networks. "Under certain conditions, iPad may not automatically rejoin a known Wi-Fi network after restart or waking from sleep," says a statement on the Apple (NASDAQ: aapl) support page.

The company says this can happen with "some third party Wi-Fi routers that are dual-band capable", and when both of those networks share the same network name, or when each band has a different security setting.

Wired reports that the dual-band routers are those compatible with both 2.4-GHz and 5-GHz spectrum bands, and usually both bands work as one network with the same name and password.

Rather than fix the iPad, Apple is suggesting customers fix their routers. Apple recommends users separate the two networks and "create separate Wi-Fi network names to identify each band--Example: Add a G to the 802.11b/g network name and an N to the 802.11n network name."

2. Which will be fixed with firmware and/or software updates, just like the iPhone.

Apple usually issues 'suggestions' like this until they get their updates ready.

Stories like this were posted (with glee) at DU days after the iPhone came out three years ago.

Apple has sold hardly any iPhones since.

3. Some other problems being reported as well
"Apple forums and the official support site are jam packed with user complaints all related to weak WiFi signal problem," Product Reviews reports. One user, Andrew79, wrote in to an Apple forum with a typical complaint, saying, "My signal keeps fluctuating from strong to weak, while my MacBook and iPhone show a consistent signal at the same location."

"New reports suggested that the iPad may not power up properly when connected to some USB ports. Users also complained that the iPad would only charge if turned off or in sleep mode." Yahoo's tech blogger shared his personal charging woes, explaining, "when I plugged my new iPad into my MacBook Pro and saw the "Not charging" message next to the iPad's battery icon." (MacWorld offers tips on how to charge your iPad.)

According to The Times, iPhone apps are frequently crashing when loaded onto the iPad. Yahoo's Ben Patterson adds, "I've been hearing a series of complaints about iPad apps crashing repeatedly; the culprits run the gamut, ranging from games and the Netflix and ABC streaming video players to apps for the New York Times and TIME magazine. "

PC World explains: "Time spent syncing is ridiculously sluggish. Some users say that syncing their iPads gobbles up 30-plus minutes -- others claim four or more hours, with one user saying they lost seven hours. This begs the question: what's the point in buying a tablet that won't let you play with it?" Users on the Apple forum report that syncing the iPad often freezes iTunes: "iTunes recognizes the iPad fine, but as soon as I click the sync apps check box, iTunes freezes."

5. My Android does the same thing.
Edited on Wed Apr-07-10 11:53 AM by Xithras
My HTC Magic connects fine initially, but if the phone goes to sleep, it won't reconnect to dual band networks.

HTC's response? "Fix your router".

I wonder if they use the same chip?

12. It wouldn't surprise me at all.
Neither company is in the business of making wifi chips, so it's totally plausible that they use the same vendor. Apple has a little more juice than HTC, though. I bet they can put enough pressure on the vendor to fix the firmware, drivers, or whatever the cause is.

6. I'm glad I'm waiting to get one, then.
This is exactly why you never buy the first version of anything. In a few months the bugs should be worked out.

9. Amen. But that doesn't keep people from posting doom-n-gloom articles
about Apple.

It's simple - Apple used to hold back devices and software until they were just about perfect. That recipe led to Microsoft dominating the market, issuing bug-ridden software that needed major fixes, but that people would buy anyway because they didn't have to wait forever like they did with Apple.

Apple learned their lesson - get the new stuff out and fix it later, just like Microsoft. Considering Apple's bottom line these days, it's a formula for success, just like it was for Microsoft.
