2. and?
not sure what your point is. 3 of the 5 safest states are in New England. Again so what. All of these states, however, have small populations. That's probably more to the point.

3. It's crime rate per capita, not absolute numbers.

9. huh? of course I'd rather live in Vermont
I'm a Vermonter to the core, but I don't see what my post had to do with absolutism.

5. I understand that, but I still believe that the small populations
(and the fact that they all have homogeneous populations) has a lot to do with why crime rates are lower in those states)

13. It doesn't matter. Cali's point still stands.

Bigger states generally have bigger cities and more economically diverse populations - which generally means more poorer people.

Is Idaho only safe because its tip, which is probably the least-populated part of the state - touches Canada? I doubt it.

It's safe because it lacks a big city. It lacks density. It lacks the true aspects of what you see in larger states.

And if we're going to cherry pick, why is it that Michigan (34th safest), Minnesota (14th safest), New York (15th safest), Ohio (28th safest), Pennsylvania (25th safest) and Washington (30th safest) aren't anywhere near the safest?

They all border Canada...

7. The have populations that are spread out
Delaware has a small population, but its density is fairly high

Alaska, I think it's the boredom that sets in during the cold months.
I'd like to see Alaska's crime statistics on a monthly (or seasonal) basis. I would guess mid-spring would be fairly high, as I would expect the mid-winter might be on the high side

11. Poverty would be my best guess
In Florida's case, high population densities, an economy in free-fall and a high senior population that makes for fairly easy targets for low-lifes

14. All states that trend conservative
Excluding Delaware for it's small size, CA and Md are a mixed bag.

Why hasn't legal medical marijuana vaulted California to the top of the list?

On edit Crime has gone down in Alaska and they have gone from 44 to 37.
Palin's been out of the state and there's less crime

Most dangerous states: Crime rankings for 2010

FYI; This thread is a little misleading. The “2010” is a published date of CQ Press’ “Crime State Rankings 2010” published date 03/23/2010.
Most of the crime data is from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report. which is available every fall for the previous year. The most recent complete, Uniform Crime Report was released back on September 14, 2009. These statistics are of crimes committed in 2008.
CQ’S “Crime City Rankings 2009-2010” published 11/23/2009 was also compiled from crimes committed in 2008.

There has been some criticism of compiling and publishing “rankings”.
In previous editions, the terms “safest” and “dangerous” were used to describe the states with lowest and highest rankings. These terms are no longer used because perceptions of safety and danger are just that—perceptions.

I find CQ’s and a few other’s publications with their “rankings” quite helpful.
