Edited on Tue Apr-06-10 08:54 PM by nadinbrzezinski

Oh and perhaps this is what they are thinking off...

And she is talking about responsibility and all that, LISTEN UP people.

Oh and thanks Rachel for putting this in context.

1. Yea!
At this point there is no winning hearts and minds. For every good act a soldiar does events like this and the cover up of these events destroys it.

4. YOu and I know better, since bad actions
are not that common, and if they are (see Abu Ghraib) they are related to really bad leadership, and why we should go after the leadership... but in the reality we live SecDef is allowed to walk.

9. I also know that we as citizens are also responsbile for this mess
continuing and that is a little fact that people here have a problem comprehending. The burden of a citizen.

When I led people though, I always promised NOT to order others what I wasn't willing to do myself, and if I ever received an Illegal order (not an amoral one, there is not such an animal in war), I'd disobey it. And unfortunately, or fortunately I got tested... and followed my heart.

Why I said that the vid, as damning as it is, I used to listen to actual tales of war crimes, so I know what legally goes into this, is not sufficient. I'd need a lot more data to make a full judgment, and for the record if the military wanted to unburden itself from a conflict of interest, perhaps they should turn that vid, and the ROE and OpOrd to a neutral third party versed in the Laws of Land Warfare. But I also know how consent is manufactured in this country.

For the record if those warrants committed a crime I want them tried in a General Court Martial, but I also want the Officer who wrote the ROE that led to that tried.

Of course, I am going here into things that many here do not understand.

15. Knowledge is power!
We have very smart folks here at DU who are not afraid to conduct analysis and study.

You are correct we need to know more about this incident. What is very worrisome is that reporters were killed. Were they killed because they were onto a story that would implicate certain military folks in other botched acts? Too many questions....

16. What stood up to me was...
they were not embeds...

and we have had a history of this throughout the whole mess... even the day the troops went into Baghdad, a tank shell was ahem "accidentally" fired at a certain hotel housing the press.

And of course they could, yes it is possible, I watched this tape over five times, that it was truly a perceived threat. So as they say, the reality lies somewhere in between.

2. And yesterday? When I saw it wasn't covered in the first segment, I turned it off
Keith also didn't seem to cover it.

Please tell me that I'm wrong and that they both covered it yesterday?

3. They didn't cover it yesterday since in the whole scheme of
things they had a slightly more important story, actually two of them

A change in the Nuclear Posture of the US, which is HUGE, and a itty bitty mine disaster.

While the vid was leaked yesterday, in the overall scheme of things it is not that urgent compared to the other two stories.

One of them already affects your life, the other is just one of those human interest stories that just broke.

5. I hear you, but many people look to her and Keith for leadership
as to what is important, and them totally ignoring it the first day sends a message.

7. Yeah that US Media comsumers
don't understand the import of some stories in the whole scheme of things.

The other message is that if you look for leadership from others, especially the media, you will get bad leadership nine times out of ten.

11. I liked her story though
she also touched on the concept of responsibility, which I expanded upon yesterday, to be raked over the coals by more than just a few.

10. Frankly I think that Rachel and Keith typically are strong leaders
Unless you just want to lump them in with all the other M$M, which I certainly don't.

12. I don't lump them there
I just don't expect them to be leaders. Just like I did not expect Dan Rather to lead, or for that mater brown, or for earlier generations, Cronkite.

That is not their role.

18. I don't totally blame them
They and a few others are the voice of truth and reason and they can only cover so much.
