Toyota sign at Wrigley Field delayed
CHICAGO, April 2 (UPI) -- A lucrative deal to erect an illuminated Toyota sign high above the Wrigley Field bleachers in Chicago is being held up over design issues, officials say.
Officials for the National League club said Thursday the bright red sign, which is to stick up 38 feet above the bleachers, won't be in place by opening day, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Friday.
The newspaper cited unnamed sources as saying the city's zoning officials want the sign 8 feet closer to home plate, bringing it inside the bleachers' back wall.
The city also wants the sign poles painted green to make them less noticeable and wants them welded to the stadium's beams, the Sun-Times said.
All that means the Cubs must revise and resubmit their permit application and gain approval not only from zoning officials but also the Commission on Chicago Landmarks, something that likely won't be completed in time for the team's April 12 home opener against Milwaukee, said Mike Lufrano, Cubs vice president of community relations.
