Anyone familiar with the Narnia series? What is going on today reminds me of The Last Battle
Edited on Fri Apr-02-10 04:56 PM by NRaleighLiberal
Near the end of the book, there was a group of dwarfs who were taken in by the false leader. Whenever the "good guys" tried to do something helpful for them, give them good food, they saw it as poison or something harmful.

That is what I see going on today - the right wing has been so poisoned by the Bush Years, by ignorance, by right wing hate radio that they refuse to see anything Obama or the Dems do as helpful - even (which is the case) it is.

At the end, Aslan decides there is nothing to be done with them, no way to win them over.

I think that is what the story is today - there are a lot of people who are simply lost causes, politically.

NOTE- this is not meant to have any religious connotation. Certainly the Narnia series can be interpreted many different ways, The passage I refer to just always made an impression on me, and seems to be very reflective of where we are as a country today.

2. Concepts that are true, are usually true in many circumstances.
Many stories have similar themes, or are retelling of the same story in different ways.

4. I think the problem is partly the 'bad guy/good guy' world view
that we are all - republican and democrat alike - are becoming entrenched in and polarized by.

7. You're probably right.
It is the main framing device used in children's entertainment, and has been for my whole lifetime at least. Unless this message is countered by parents, teachers, and the news media, people simply don't "outgrow" this world view as they should.

8. Another Narnia Analogy, The witch makes the prince forget the sun and sky and stars
exist at all. But then he is saved with a "come to Aslan" moment!

9. Thanks all - nice to see some Narnia fans here! I read them prior to Lord of the Rings.
Loved both - esp. Dawn Treader book.
