Pope's Personal Preacher: Accusations Against Benedict Are Like 'Anti-Semitism'

“VATICAN CITY — At a solemn Good Friday service, Pope Benedict XVI's personal preacher said allegations that the pontiff covered up sex abuse cases by Catholic clergymen reminded him of the "more shameful aspects of anti-Semitism."

Within hours, a Vatican spokesman sought to distance the pope from his preacher's remarks after both Jews and a leading abuse victims group reacted sharply, criticizing the comparison with violence that culminated in the Holocaust to the accusations made against Benedict.

The Vatican has been on the defensive in recent days, saying the church has been singled out and collectively stereotyped for the problem of pedophilia, which it says is a society-wide issue.

Good Friday is a particularly delicate day in a decades-long effort by Jews and Catholics to overcome a legacy of mistrust. Particularly harmful to the relations was the long-held Catholic belief that Jews were collectively responsible for executing Christ. A landmark achievement of the Second Vatican Council of the 1960s was a declaration stating the Jews should not be blamed for the crucifixion.”…cont…

There's just no way that analogy works... not in any way, shape, or form! It only furthers and compounds my sense of betrayal!

Who's working their PR? Cheney? Rove? C'mon! WTF?

5. I'm confused.
Is he saying that the pope's failure to act to protect innocent human beings from violence was similar to people ignoring what was happening to Jewish people in Hitler's Germany? If so, he is accurate in a way that most followers of the cone head would dare admit to.

7. Invoking some variation of Godwin's law isn't going to help here
After surveying the hole you guys have dug, I suggest you stop digging and think this through a bit more; it's not rocket surgery.

12. True. Pedophilia is a society-wide issue, but covering it up for 50 fucking years
--is a Catholic Church issue.

13. They seem to have forgotten then 1,100 years of keeping Jews locked in Papal ghettoes????
Forcing Jews to wear Yellow Stars --

Isolating them from society -- barring them from education, professions, etal?

Must have just slipped their minds?

Or, are they counting on the fact that their members don't know this?

It took the French first -- and then the Italians to free Jews from the ghettoes --

and after that 1,100 years, the Vatican then proceeeded on a 100 year campaign of

vile propaganda against the Jews!

And, we wonder how Hitler got the notion that it would be a good idea to put Jews in

concentration camps?
