Stupid: It Aint Just for Republicans Anymore
Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) is afraid that the U.S. Territory of Guam is going to "tip over and capsize" due to overpopulation.

Johnson expressed his worries during a House Armed Services Committee hearing on the defense budget Thursday.

Addressing Adm. Robert Willard, who commands the Navy's Pacific Fleet, Johnson made a tippy motion with his hands and said sternly, "My fear is that the whole island will become so overly populated that it will tip over and capsize."

Willard paused and said: "We don't anticipate that."

3. Well, it's nice to know we no longer have to bear the burden
of being knowledgeable about everything any more or even paragons of sanity. We'll continue to look that way next to most Republicans, of course, but that perfection thing was becoming far too heavy a burden.

What a doofus. Of course he's from Dixie.

22. I spent much of my later school years in Dixie, and I aint dumb
However, nobody seems to do dumb like Dixie does, although I've met dummies all over the country. Dixie is the only place it's considered a populist virtue.

And if you want to call people assholes, start with that face staring back from a mirror.

28. I'm from the Heart of Dixie
Edited on Fri Apr-02-10 02:32 PM by Chulanowa
And it's only due to a long upriver struggle, akin to the trials of the chinook salmon, struggling against the current of stupidity in public education and popular culture, that i'm also not dumb.

I've spent the last several years patting my brain and reassuring myself that, despite my time in Alabama and Georgia and Mississippi, it's all still there. Reassuring myself that, despite all the people assuring me that Jefferson Davis was a founding father, that turtles can leave their shells, and that it's okay to "round up" the value of Pi, I'm still an intelligent individual.

It's a scary place. Maybe Florida is better...

yeah or maybe not. Oops.

30. Keep an eye on the news out of Florida
While Dixie has made a virtue of dumb, Florida has almost cornered the market on crazy.

And yes, I've lived there, too.

24. I for one, (the only one it seems) don't think the guy meant that
literally. I think he was talking in metaphors.

This guy was a lawyer and former judge, I hear. No way you're smart enough to pass the bar but believe something like this.

I don't think hew meant it literally. If he did, then I'm with everybody else.

32. "and capsize"
He didn't say, it will reach the tipping point - he said "tip over and capsize".

And Capsize!!!

I am the first to give people the benefit of the doubt on making word jumbles, but he said "tip over and capsize", with his hands doing a little tippy rolly thingy. No metaphor.

29. i understand he's got hepatitis c and may be on interferon, which can have cognitive side effects
can't say whether or not he's that stupid without the meds, but having been on another cognitive-impairing med (topomax, aka DOPamax, for migraine prophylaxis), if it is the meds, he has my complete sympathy.

been there, done that. just glad *i* wasn't on t.v. when i, as the resident analytics guru, couldn't see "2+2" on one side, and "=4" on the other, and somehow couldn't make the connection. glad i didn't lose my job, either.

I have serious cognitive impairment because of thyroid dysfunction.

You don't go from intelligent to "the island might tip over".

You do things like call and ask for the phone number of campaign headquarters, only to hear your friend say "it's on the web site", duh, which you know because you've been in the web site business for 13 years. (Yes I did that 2 days ago)

38. Topomax can almost do it.
Edited on Fri Apr-02-10 09:15 PM by JoeyT
Though usually when it hits you hard enough to make you go from intelligent to "the island might tip over" you're incoherent enough that people have trouble understanding you anyway. So that drug probably isn't the cause either.
I've spent this entire thread giggling like an idiot, so if it turns out to be a medical condition I'm going to feel bad. :P
