Iraq vet kills wife and then himself
Child-custody dispute suspected in Lawson deaths
By DONALD BRADLEY and ROBERT A. CRONKLETON
The Kansas City Star

At 9:10 p.m. Wednesday, Alex Caton posted to his Facebook page for the final time: “Alex Caton just messed up his life.”

An Army buddy quickly responded: “How?”

There was no reply, but the “how” was soon answered after police responded 50 minutes later to a shooting in the 500 block of Country Drive in Lawson, Mo..

They found Michelle Caton, 21, a young mother dead in her parents’ home. Her 23-year-old husband, Alex, who had served as an Army forward observer, also was dead.

The shots brought concerned neighbors to their doors and windows.

“It was dark, so we knew it wasn’t recreational shooting,” one man said.

Dale Banning, father-in-law to Alex Caton, was found in the street with two gunshot wounds. He told the first people to the scene to call 911 and to take care of his grandchild.

3. Son-in-Law just went in to become a mental health speecialist
He'll be counseling young men and women like this. I'm afraid of how it's going to affect him when he loses a few of them, because inevitably, he will. He's a very compassionate, sensitive guy, and it's going to be very hard for him.

5. Where did you
get the info that he served in Iraq?

I am in that area, have friends with ties to Iraq and would like to make sure they are up to date.

Thank you.

6. Here
Neighbors said Caton had returned from Iraq about a year ago and had been fighting with his wife over their son. The young couple were residents of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, but had separated and Michelle had moved in with her parents in Lawson.

7. Thank you very much
Knowing he was at Bragg helps a TON when passing this on.
