My prediction (as if it matters): tough gas mileage standards won't survive
Yes, the tough gas mileage standards this president proposed yesterday is a very good thing. But based on what I learned from the healthcare debate this won't survive. It seems that's how this president plays ball. Do something that angers the left while proposing something else that will make them happy. However, as soon as the republicans start making enough noise the good things gets taken out or watered down while the bad things stay.

During the health care debate it was the public option. The president proposed mandates which most of the left (and he himself during the campaign) opposed so he combined it with a public option to make us happy. As the debate moved on and the right made more noise the public option kept getting watered down until it was completely removed while the mandates stayed. Same thing will happen here, republicans will make noise about the tough gas mileage standards as will the car companies and somewhere along the way those standards will be watered down or eliminated entirely. While oil drilling will remain the key component of the legislation.

Just wanted to make this prediction now, because once it happens many people here seem to forgive and forget.
