When i first heard about this story in my town I honestly thought it was a joke, but since I know some right wing docs personally it sadly doesn't surprise me. Lake County is home to The Villages which is very very republican.. however Mount Dora, which is 25 minutes away in the same county is more of an artsy small town and shouldn't be bashed cause of one idiot.

from the Orlando Sentinel:

A doctor who considers the national health-care overhaul to be bad medicine for the country posted a sign on his office door telling patients who voted for President Barack Obama to seek care "elsewhere."

"I'm not turning anybody away — that would be unethical," Dr. Jack Cassell, 56, a Mount Dora urologist and a registered Republican opposed to the health plan, told the Orlando Sentinel on Thursday. "But if they read the sign and turn the other way, so be it."

The sign reads: "If you voted for Obama...seek urologic care elsewhere. Changes to your healthcare begin right now, not in four years."

check out the pic he put up!

Estella Chatman, 67, of Eustis, whose daughter snapped a photo of the typewritten sign, sent the picture to U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson, the Orlando Democrat who riled Republicans last year when he characterized the GOP's idea of health care as, "If you get sick America ... Die quickly.

Chatman said she heard about the sign from a friend who was referred to Cassell after his physician recently died. She said her friend did not want to speak to a reporter, but was dismayed by Cassell's sign.

"He's going to find another doctor," she said

I really can't believe these doctors can be this hypocritical.. they've gotten medicare for years from all of lake counties old people and gotten rich off of it and now this.

but before you make any assumptions there might be a method to his madness.

Cassell, whose lawyer-wife, Leslie Campione, has declared herself a Republican candidate for Lake County commissioner, said three patients have complained, but most have been "overwhelmingly supportive" of his position.

"They know it's not good for them," he said.

so pretty much he risked his integrity and practice to better his wifes political aspirations.. wowza.

and finally Grayson responds

The outspoken Grayson described Cassell's sign as "ridiculous."

"I'm disgusted," he said. "Maybe he thinks the Hippocratic Oath says, ‘Do no good.' If this is the face of the right-wing in America, it's the face of cruelty...Why don't they change the name of the Republican Party to the Sore Loser Party."

and here is a tidbit I found in case you want to know what this dude looks like and his rating.. can u guess how many stars he gets? not a guy who takes his profession too seriously eh?

http://www.vitals.com/doctor/rate/Dr_Jack_Cassell

for the record lake county county commissioners are ALL republican, so this stunt might actually work. Its one thing to pull a stunt like this to gain political points amongst your own rabid supporters, but when it involves medicine and peoples health something about this just bothers me to the core as a progressive. Doctors should try to better medicine, not better their wallets or spouses political dreams. Our side just has different opinions I guess. If I am ever bicycling down the road near his office and I see this doctor I will tell him my opinion nicely.

2. No, he has not refused to treat Obama patients
"I'm not turning anybody away — that would be unethical," Dr. Jack Cassell

Not defending the guy but he has NOT refused to treat anyone.

If I were his patient I would be glad to know how he feels and be glad to take my business elsewhere.

29. "If you voted for Obama...seek urologic care elsewhere"
Edited on Fri Apr-02-10 12:07 PM by DeschutesRiver
The sign is posted at his office, and will be seen by his patients, new and old ones. That is the intended audience, ie people who have driven to his practice for treatment.

The sign instructs those of his patients who voted for Obama 2 years ago in the election ("If you voted for Obama"), to go elsewhere for the treatment they showed up to receive ("seek urologic care elsewhere). There was no other option given. I don't read that sign as saying that patients who voted for Obama can still get urologic care from this doctor.

These aren't random folks shopping at a mall or reading this on the internet - the sign is for patients who show up at his practice with appointments to see a doctor for treatment. Which is being refused to those patients who voted for a particular political candidate in a two year old election. Based on a particular piece of legislation just passed.

His stupid oral disavowal after the fact of the clear intent of his sign suggests that he isn't a particularly bright individual. There is always a top and a bottom of the class in med school, but they all call themselves doctor when they graduate.

This man isn't a doctor. He is a guy who went to medical school. His sign at least is making it easier for all of his patients to heed the warning that any treatment they may need from him will be given to him or not given based upon his political beliefs, not some stupid hypocratic oath.

5. Would he deny care to Muslims? To gays?
It's all unethical behavior, and the Florida Medical Association should have a word with him.

21. He hasn't denied care to anyone.
All he's really done is put up a tacky (but in my opinion constitutionally protected) sign.

I'm not seeing the big deal here. It's not like DU wouldn't be cheering on a doctor who refused care to a repub.

9. I'm of 2 minds
On the one hand, people should not be refused care.

On the other hand, if the sign had said "Palin supporters go elsewhere", it wouldn't bother me at all.

19. Here, let me translate that sign for everyone: "A bad doctor works here."
The perky drug reps tell this doctor what to prescribe. His medical skills are not current; he regards CME (Continuing Medical Education) as an opportunity to go on vacation and socialize with other fossils such as himself. Patients this doctor dislikes will suffer a reduced quality of care. Patients this doctor likes will often receive inappropriate care.

In short, he's got a bad case of TFDS (Toxic Fossil Doctor Syndrome) and the quality of medical care in his community will improve when he retires, drops dead, or has his license taken away.

20. Cassell, quickly backpedaled in an interview
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/04/02/jack-cassell-doctor-refus_n_523076.html

Florida urologist Jack Cassell posted a sign on his office door reading, "If you voted for Obama ... seek urologic care elsewhere. Changes to your health care begin right now, not in four years."

Cassell, a registered Republican, quickly backpedaled in an interview with the Orlando Sentinel, but said he's perfectly happy to lose business over the sign. "I'm not turning anybody away, that would be unethical," he told the Orlando Sentinel. "But if they read the sign and turn the other way, so be it."
