American University Date Rape Controversy
I wanted to talk about the American University date rape controversy. For those of you who have not heard, recently a male student wrote an article in the school newspaper in which he claimed any woman who goes to a party, drinks, and walks to a guys room is "indicating" that she wants something to happen. CBS News allowed the guy and a female student from American University to appear on their morning show to discuss this issue. In my opinion the guy used faulty logic throughout his appearance on The Early Show.

In order to defend his statement he claimed that many men are wrongly accused of rape each year. He also brought up the Duke Lacrosse case. I do not think either the Duke Lacrosse case or the fact that many men are wrongly accused of rape have anything to do with his article or the fact that he said a woman was "indicating" she wanted something to happen. After that he brought up the fact that he was gay and then said in a perfect world he would be able to walk down any street in Mississippi holding a man's hand. Once again I do not think that has anything to do with what he said.

In my opinion it is dape rape if a woman is drunk. In my opinion being drunk prevents one from being able to deny consent. If anyone, male or female, is put in a position, even if it can be said they put themselves in that positition, it is date rape. I do think women should avoid getting drunk at parties, but if they do that does not give any man the right to have sex with her. If a woman is drunk men should just not have sex with the woman.

1. my 12 yr old 6th grader son told me yesterday he had a "worth the wait" class
so we discussed what he was taught. one of the things that was brought up was the teacher asking kids if they knew what date rape was. i was curious about the discussion so asked what the definition teacher gave. teacher reduced it to, you are on a date, and the male rapes the female.

lol

now, i do know that my son is young in the sex education classes process and they progress as he gets older. i am going to ask his older brother, if they explore the subject more in later years.

BUT

what i did do with my 12 yr old yesterday is have a discussion that there is a lot of the iffy, the fuzzy and the responsibility of both genders to be clear on what they want, and have clear consent of the other, and be respectful of the other.

the movie discussion thread we had on du a couple months ago and this article here came into the discussion with son. the movie thread was of a wasted girl, throwing up outside. the guy takes her to room and is screwin her while she is passed out. she wakes up and says why are you stoppin, and then passes out again, as the guy goes back to screwin her.

we had at least one poster on du defend the screwer. saying it wasnt rape screwin an unconscious peron.

i made clear to son. if the girl is unconscious.... lol, that is wrong.

anyway

many opportunities for discussion of late.

2. This student is an agent provocateur who is getting exactly what he wants
from having wrote what he wrote: media attention.

He probably figured he wants to be rich and famous, and he might as well start in college. Fastest way to do it? Write something outrageous for his school newspaper. Something outrageous and utterly wrong. Then he'll be roundly condemned, he'll get calls from TV network news shows wanting him to come on and defend himself, and he'll be on his way. Nice job, asshole.
