Gay and Lesbian resort Vandalized
Edited on Fri Apr-02-10 07:51 AM by Mari333
this is right near me...
SAUGATUCK, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The City of Saugatuck is dealing with some pretty demeaning messages.

Someone vandalized a fence outside of a gay campground in Gaines Township over the weekend.

Anti-gay remarks were posted all over the fence along with a swastika.

the comments section infuriates me.

3. To me, people that do this are all cut out of the same piece of cloth... ignorant,
hateful, bigoted, racist and on and on... they are looking for anyway to express their hostility and dangerous physical expressions of their distorted views of the world. And cult religion is always a convenient cloak and umbrella for justification in their minds.

4. 8 pages of comments. Must be slow news day in Saugatuck.
"Hey there's a fag story in the paper! Pile on!"

Blecch.

6. It is an extraordinary town
all of the businesses LGBT friendly, everyone has rainbow flags, the place is a gay resort. wonderful vibes. and every once in a while, this happens. especially now, in this hate filled climate in the USA.

but I know the people who own the businesses in Saugatuck, and they wont take this without a fight. they are business owners and entrepeneurs who will refuse this type of demeaning bullshit.

I have one friend there who was beaten within an inch of his life by a group of idiots, one weekend as he walked down the street. this town is in the heart of SW Mi, which is loaded with idiots all around in the rural areas.

But they are still a fantastic resort, and will persevere.

7. Oh, dear lord.
How is your friend now, Mari333? Not that anyone can heal completely from something like that...
I'm so sorry.

8. oh he is a kind and good man and yet
when he described how 5 guys jumped out of a red truck and beat him with belts..

whats the difference between that and the SS beating up jews??? nothing.

and he has to live with that every day.

makes me so angry. but he is a fighter and keeps up the good fight for his rights.

hugs

10. They're around anyplace IMO. All they need is some excuse real or imagined. Yes,
they are the same types as the SS IMO. This element seems to have always been with us throughout history. What I find a little disturbing is the feeling for the need of concealed weapons for personal safety. I have mixed feelings on this, but I can certainly see both sides of the issue.

I have a friend that was nearly beaten to death because they thought he was gay. He was not, he was a professor, but in their distorted view of the world he just did not look just like them. I find it a sad world we are living in today, at one time I thought it was getting better, now I just don't know anymore. I can also see why some feel Pink Pistols is an answer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pink_Pistols

14. Actually, my boss' secretary went there on vacation a while ago.
And commented on how lovely it was. She grew up in Mich.

Too bad a few jerks can have such an impact on an otherwise nice place.

12. And many don't care.
If this story was about any other minority group, this thread would already have a hundred replies.

15. You would think these people would just burn out on their hatred
When I started on DU I despised the Republicans and the Bush Administration with a white-hot rage, it consumed me and after the 2nd election was stolen, I basically had a nervous breakdown. I was too emotionally involved and eventually I could maintain being that angry for that long without losing my mind.

I still get angry, but not like I used to - it's not constructive and I am a little more philosophical these days. I don't think I have control over everything and I just do what I can do to make things better and leave the rest to fate.

20. With one political party promoting hatred of anything "different"
And the other not actively fighting back, why is it surprising to see this kind of thing happening? I am just so tired of this. Our country should be better than it is.

21. Sickening
I hope they put the creeps away for a long, long time. I couldn't get past the first hateful comment. The rage I feel probably doesn't even come close to what out GLBT brothers and sisters feel. I am so tired of the hate and violence.
